Time for another movie roundup
I need to do these sooner. I've already forgotten a couple of these.
Fighting With My Family: Pretty entertaining movie. Made me temporarily obsessed with Florence Pugh, as I immediately watched a couple other of the movies after seeing this.
Greta: Straddles the line between respectable thriller and total camp.
Apollo 11: IMAX doc about the mission to the moon. It's really more comprehensive than gripping.
Five Feet Apart: Haley Lu Richardson is wonderful, and I even thought Cole Sprouse was good. The last act almost undoes all the goodwill it builds up, but it's still a solid addition to the sick kids romance genre.
Captive State: An alien invasion movie sort of redone as a serious spy drama. It's a weird mix and often doesn't work, but points for trying.
Us: I didn't like this as much as Get Out. It's got less on its mind, but it's well put together and Lupita Nyong'o is outstanding. I wish they hadn't explained what the dopplegangers are.
Gloria Bell: Knew nothing about this going in, but really liked it. Probably my favorite Julianne Moore performance.
The Beach Bum: McConaughey fits this like a glove, of course. It's intentionally rambling, and random, but some of the bits are really amusing to watch.
Hotel Mumbai: The best movie I've seen so far this year. A very realistic and visceral dramatization of the 2008 terrorist attack in India. I guess some of the characters are more like ideas than the real people, so it can't match something like United 93, but the filmmaking here is amazing. Incredibly tense, very well acted. I'm sure Endgame will knock it from that top spot soon, but this will be on my year end top 10 for sure. Maybe top 5.
The Best of Enemies: One of the more bland movies of this type I've seen. It just doesn't have much new to being to the race relations genre. I guess it really fudged the true story a lot. Plus I couldn't get past the absurd fake saggy breasts that Taraji Henson had to wear the whole movie.
Pet Sematary: Nothing special as far as horror remakes go. But I did go back and watch the original and its sequel, neither of which are really good at all, so this new one IS the best Pet Sematary movie.
Hellboy: Yeah they really should have just let Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman make another one. This one isn't terrible, it's just sorely lacking the earlier films wit, humor and creativity. This one's kind of just a lot of.chaotic noise.
