Just another one of those days, eh, Rocco?
Classic summer 2019 Minnesota Twins.
Even when they do something good lately, they do something to fuck up any good vibes.
The Twins hit the road and took 3 of 4 in Chicago. Good. Solid. Then they take the first 2 in Miami. Good. Solid. Doing what you're supposed to do.
And then they take a 4-1 lead into the 9th today. Good. All set up for a sweep to cap off a 7-1 road trip.
And then they fuck it up.
Newly acquired Sam Dyson comes in for the 9th. Now, Dyson literally had just gotten off a plane a few hours before. He didn't even show up at the ballpark til the middle of the game. Do you think he would possibly be prepared to pitch today, let alone in a save situation?
Well Rocco sure did. He sent Dyson out, and immediately it was clear Dyson was not prepared to pitch. Now, whether it was unfamiliarity with the catcher, the signs, the whole team, jet lag, whatever. There's a reason you don't just hop a plane and play a game hours later.
Dyson goes walk, single, double walk. It's stupid he went out at all. It's criminal he was allowed to face 4 batters. Once again Rocco fucks up at both ends. Taylor Rogers comes in and miraculously extends the game , but one single tied it. The damage was done.
Then we get the usual ice cold extra inning bats and finally a Marlins walkoff, but this loss is entirely on Rocco.
Asked after the game our genius skipper said it was "just one of those days." No Rocco, you MADE it one of those days. And you do this shit a lot. He has exacerbated the bullpen problems all year.
Only a damn fool would think sending Dyson out there today made sense. It's just not done. Even if Dyson had arrived first thing in the morning it would have been dicey. But he showed up mid game. He probably had no idea who he was even pitching to. He didn't have time to look at scouting reports or anything. He didn't know the catcher. It was an insane decision. And it was yet another win needlessly turned into a loss.
The fact we are counting on this guy to hold off a charge from a team managed by Terry Francona means we are doomed.
I don't blame Dyson. I'm sure he'll be fine when he isn't being set up to fail by a manager who isn't nearly the genius he seems to think he is.
