Another batch of reviews
RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON
I'm not usually into animated adventure movies, but I thought this was pretty good. The story was solid, the characters were fun and interesting. Great animation. You could do a lot worse for sure.
WILLY'S WONDERLAND
A little disappointing. I expected a camp classic, with Nic Cage battling some animatronic demons. But it's never THAT fun. Cage literally has no dialogue. I get that in itself is part of the joke, but come on. Anyone could have played the role then.
FRENCH EXIT
Lousy movie, easily the worst I have seen in theaters since COVID began. It's like a really bad Woody Allen ripoff. Not funny, not smart, nothing of value to say. Michelle Pfeiffer is not terrible, but this movie is full of irritating supporting characters who for some inexplicable reason all wind up sharing the same apartment by the end.
MORTAL KOMBAT
Never saw the original movies. I thought this reboot was fine for what it is. Plot isn't good and much of the dialogue is pure cheese, but the fights are mostly pretty cool (and very R) and that's all that most people wanted from this in the first place.
BREAKING NEWS IN YUBA COUNTY
I have missed these weird little ensemble crime comedies. These used to be a staple of my latter day Blockbuster renting, where I would see the cover showing a bunch of name actors in a movie I never hear of before. This is mostly an Allison Janney show, but we get Mila Kunis, Awkwafina and Regina Hall and a genuinely funny this time Wanda Sykes.
BARB AND STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR
Okay, this is a surprise. I figured this Kristen Wiig comedy would have a few laughs, but I didn't expect it to all play out on a positively bizarre wavelength. This is a straaaaange flick, but it really clicks. It's legit one of the funniest movies of the last few years.
FOUR GOOD DAYS
Every gorgeous actress has to "ugly" themselves up for a role at least once. In this movie it is Mila Kunis's turn, as she plays a drug addict trying to get clean. Now, of course, even here she looks good (other than the fake teeth), but her performance is very good. Glenn Close (looking exactly like Robin Williams for some reason) is pretty good as her mom. The overall film would be better, but it really has nothing new to offer at all to this genre. Everything about it is completely by the numbers.
TOGETHER TOGETHER
A nice warm hearted comedy with Ed Helms as a single guy who hires a surrogate (the excellent Patti Harrison) to have his kid, and they become friends. I liked that they never go for a romance, it is just them as friends. I could have gone for this movie being longer, honestly. It's never that funny but it's good company.
