Halloween H40

The new Halloween movie has really been built up by the filmmakers and a lot of fans as the 1st REAL sequel. This movie retroactively removes every single sequel or reboot as canon. So you would think that with that build up this film must really be good.

It's not. It's actually kind of terrible. It's already made a bucket of money, and will surely lead to a whole new batch of sequels, but it's not good.

The film has no personality. It's weird. You'd think that with David Gordon Green directing and with Danny McBride as one of the writers, you'd expect this film to stand out. But mostly it's content to just trace the outlines of previous films. It's basically a more serious version of H20, only with Jamie Lee Curtis's family tree a little altered.

Halloween H40 is basically just a mediocre slasher movie that wallows in all the worst tropes of the genre. It has no characters aside from Curtis who hold your interest at all. It's not scary, or unsettling. The few times the classic score kicks in feel like the filmmakers getting desperate. It has no comic relief, aside from one sequence with a babysitter that is not surprisingly the film's best.

Michael Meyers remains a completely uninteresting figure. This film tries to get into his.psychology a little bit, but none of that works. In general, the unstoppable, omniscient killing machine is always a bore. And of course this movie shows him dead, but he won't be. There is one twist in the movie that could have worked around the Meyers problem, but that's thrown away within minutes.

I had hoped at least the climax would be worth it. The movie builds up Curtis as this badass who has spent 40 years tirelessly preparing to fight Meyers, to the point that her house is outfitted like one big panic room. Yet when the showdown arrives she just does a whole bunch of stupid slasher movie victim shit, and more or less beats him through dumb luck.

Well, maybe in 2038 we can have another Halloween reboot where Curtis fights off Michael Meyers inside her.nursing home.
