Oscar nominations, and catching up on reviews
Oscar nominations are out. 2019 was a great year for movies, so it would have been awfully hard to fuck up the nominees. And a lot of great stuff got nominated.
I liked all 9 best picture nominees. Scarlett got nominated twice. Florence Pugh got nominated. Joe Pesci got nominated, which is so cool.
Endgame only got the usual fx nod. I didn't expect it to get major nods, but if Rise of Skywaller can slip in for the score then Endgame should as well.
Knives Out at least got a screenplay nod.
Some of the nominees include recent movies I never actually did a blog review for.
Uncut Gems
The biggest snub by FAR was Uncut Gems, specifically Adam Sandler. It's criminal. They nominate 2 performances in movies that nobody has raved about but snub Sandler. And even if you are going to deny his incredible performance, how do you ignore that film's score or editing or just the film itself? I saw this twice now and it is just a incredible film.
Bombshell
Both Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie got nominated for this. And both are really good, especially Theron. I thought the film was just alright. On paper it's similar in tone to something like Vice but it felt a lot more bland than I expected.
Little Women
I wasn't over the moon for this, but I did like it. The ensemble is just great. Florence Pugh is just dazzling. I would be elated if she won for this. Saoirse Ronan is great. This is the best thing Emma Watson has done in a long time.
Just Mercy
This got no nominations, but should have. This is similar to a lot of very Oscar friendly films that were not this good but DID get awards recognition. Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx are each in peak form. Brie Larson's role is a lot smaller than I expected from the trailer, but she's excellent.
1917
This might be the best picture.favorite and it's outstanding. It's made to look like essentially 2 really long takes, following 2 WW1 soldiers on a mission. It's a technical gimmick, sure, but man is it well done. It really sucks you in. The camerawork is incredible. The period detail is spot on. It's exciting and really tense. It is kind of lacking as far as character moments go, but that's about the only flaw.
The Grudge
Uh, yeah, now about those NEW movies for 2020. This is the only one I've seen so far, and it's not a good start to the movie year. In fact, I'm sure this will be on my 10 worst list. It's SO BORING. I fell asleep for a while til a jump scare woke me up. It's set in like 3 different time periods for some reason. It just stunk.
