Done being a Timberwolves fan

As I sat there watching the Wolves game tonight, watching them somehow turn a 27 point lead on a night where they hit more 3s than they ever had before, into a blown loss in overtime, my reaction was not anger. It was not frustration. It was not sadness. It wasn't even really laughter.

It was just total, complete apathy.

I haven't been emotionally invested in this franchise since Kevin Garnett was traded in 2007. I used to live and die with this team in the late 90s and early to mid 2000s. But even in the couple post-KG years I had cheap season tickets I mostly just went to games, watched the Wolves get destroyed, and felt bored.

And since then my interest has just faded more and more. Kevin Love proved to be a diva asshole and we had to trade him. The Butler-Thibs debacle obliterated any hope for the Towns-Wiggina era to be any different. Oh we got that one playoff series out of it, but now look at where this franchise sits.

This season was always being approached as a sort of teardown. Bring in a slew of young guys and role players and see if anything sticks, as you more or less tank.

But why bother?

This is a franchise with 30 years of stunning ineptitude in its rearview mirror, a disastrous present, and a future that simply does not exist.

If the plan is to tank and try to build around Towns and Wiggins, we already know that is doomed to failure.

Wiggins is just not ever going to be.a star player. And the stories of Towns wanting out have already begun to surface. Oh sure they're just whispers and rumors right now, but they were with Kevin Love at first too. Reality is that the next postseason game Towns plays will be with another franchise. Even if the current rebuild could pan out, we are years from being any kind of serious contender. Towns is not waiting that long.

The draft will bring no help. Even if the Wolves tank successfully, the draft lottery will screw them, and either way we know the Wolves will blow whatever pick they get. In 22 draft lottery seasons they have made the right pick(or trade for a pick), what, maybe 5 times. Jarret Culver looks like the latest non-impact bust.

Can't get any truly useful free agents, cause nobody has ever wanted to come here when they've had options. Can't trade for anybody, cause you have no assets that anyone would want.

Ryan Saunders should not be a head coach. If his last name wasn't Saunders he wouldn't be. He is laughably in over his head. His incompetence isn't even allowing the front office to find out if any of these current players are any good.

I have said for years that we as Minnesota sports fans would honestly just all be better off if the Wolves just moved. Go to Seattle. Or Vegas. Anywhere that could spare us having to watch this woebegone franchise. Just let us keep the Lynx and I'm good.

But as for the Wolves, at this point the only thing that makes me still a fan has been geography. I instinctively root for the Minnesota teams, even if only the Vikings, Twins and Lynx, and maybe Gopher football are teams I honestly care about (the Wild maybe slip in there too).

But those teams at least have at some point rewarded my fandom with titles or at least some playoff excitement.

The Wolves have provided so little in 30 years. They play in a league that just gets worse and worse every year. They have no hope to ever be anything much better than they are right now.

So I am done. I renounce my Minnesota Timberwolves fandom. I'm going to just gather up all my Wolves gear, and put it in a box, and stick it somewhere that I never have to look at it again.
