Welcome to the suck
Everything sucks right now.
We are only a few days into our new world, a world that isn't just without sports and likely soon without movie theaters, but may also soon be in a virtually nationwide lockdown of everything. It could be a matter of days before we are all basically ordered to stay locked in our homes.
It's awful. It's tense. It's depressing. And there is no end to this in sight.
It's become crystal clear over these bleak last few days that all this stuff that, not to be too morose, makes the awfulness of life bearable, is gone for a LONG time.
Every day...hell, practically every hour, there is a new guideline or advisement or whatever to limit or outright ban groups of ever dwindling numbers. It's like The Happening, where the poison kept infecting smaller and smaller groups until nobody was safe.
Does anybody honestly think this nightmare is going to suddenly do a 180° in the next few weeks, or even months?
It's all over. 2020 is cancelled. Sports are not coming back. The NBA and NHL are not coming back for even abbreviated playoffs. Baseball is not going to have a season. The WNBA will not have a season. The NFL obviously is a ways off, but forget that too.
If these leagues are not coming back until this virus either has a vaccine or some other treatment, so that the threat is diminished to the level of a flu, and large groups can safely gather again without everyone being scared to death of getting sick, then there is no chance in hell that sports exist again in 2020, and probably not until well into NEXT year either. And that's presuming that a vaccine or treatment DOES get figured out, and that the virus doesn't mutate into something even worse like Spanish Flu did (fyi, don't read or watch stuff about that if you want to retain hope).
And movies are probably days away from being taken down for good too. This weekend had the worst theater attendance since 2000, back when studios basically took entire months off still. Nothing of note is scheduled for at least the next few weeks. Some theaters have already shut down out east, and that will inevitably become nationwide.
Same rules apply here. Theaters won't re-open til the virus is under control at least. So no Black Widow. No big summer movies like Wonder Woman 1984. They'll all obviously see the light of day eventually, but not this year. Once theaters close up, I doubt we see them open back up again in 2020.
This is life now. Maybe if we had even the slightest bit of competence or care in our leadership, but Trump and his goons literally don't give a shit. They flood money into the stock market while ignoring the fact that all these entities shutting down are going to cause MILLIONS to lose what little financial cushion they may have, if not lose their jobs entirely. If these capitalist demons had any soul they'd make all COVID testing and treatment free, and provide paid time off or some other financial relief for those affected, but they won't, cause they are demons. Hell, why are NBA players donating to help out arena workers? Why aren't the BILLIONAIRE owners doing that? This crisis is not making the bad people in this country better. It's exposing yet again that they are beyond redemption. Too bad we can't vote our way out of this this fall, cause even if Trump doesn't use the virus as an excuse to cancel the elections altogether, the turnout will inevitably be much lower than we need it to be.
We are all fucked even if this virus does get defeated quickly.
It really feels like we have been dropped into one of those dystopian futures. They may make for good stories in film or TV, but who the fuck wants to actually live in that world?
I apologize to the 2010s. You sucked, but you never ever felt this hopeless.
