Vikings draft preview

No, not a mock, just some general thoughts on how I think the Vikings should and will approach things in a draft that could very well mean the difference between being a strong super bowl contender next year or being a 2nd tier playoff team.

I am definitely in the camp that says you take the best player available in early rounds regardless of position, provided it is absolutely NOT a need position. So no QB, RB, TE, or specialists. Any other position group is on the table, with cornerback, o-line and wide receiver pretty much agreed upon as the top 3 areas of need.

Just don't reach for a 1st round WR because you traded Diggs for a 1st and think that means you have to draft his replacement with that pick. Reaching for a need, or a perceived need, is how you get Troy Williamson, Christian Ponder and Laquon Treadwell.

WR is supposed to be extremely deep in this draft, so I would pluck a couple of middle round guys to add to the mix. Spielman has had some pretty good luck with middle round receivers (Diggs, Bisi Johnson, Jarius Wright).

Gotta come out of this draft with at least 1 immediate starter in the secondary. It looks like we may indeed keep Anthony Harris, so safety could be set. But at the moment your most experienced CB by far is Mike Hughes. I would still bring in a couple cheap veterans at corner, but there are no sure starters left.

OL is an evergreen need. Anyone taken in the first round there has to be an immediate starter.

DL and LB are also areas that could be improved, and surely will have depth picks in the middle and late rounds. But if a blue chip guy is there at one of those 1st round spots I could see the Vikings taking an impact player.

Trading down is.also a possibility. I suppose trading up is too, but given their spot it seems that if they move either way it's down. And obviously Trader Rick will be making moves all throughout the draft. We go in with 12 picks but there is no way we add 12 players to the roster.

I'm curious to see how this draft goes, what with it being a virtual draft. I hope it makes for better TV than the WNBA draft did, where ESPN spent more time.talking about Kobe Bryant than the actual draft picks.
