Minnesota Vikings offseason preview

Okay, I figured I had better get to one of these eventually. And the Vikings have yet to make any moves aside from coaching, so I still have time. I'll just go position by position. QB:  Much to the chagrin of the ignorant haters, Kirk stays. The few QBs who may be available that are an upgrade on Kirk are going to be far too pricey to get. And the ones who aren't as good as Kirk, well, aren't as good as Kirk. Why get them? The odds are far greater that the front office tries to do another rework of the Kirk deal to lower that 2022 cap number. Backup QB could hold a little more interest. I really wish we could just move on from Sean Mannion. He's useless on the field. Nate Stanley and Jake Browning are nothing. Drafting a QB of the future is not entirely impossible but again we have a really good QB with prime years left. It's not like we have a Brees or Roethlisberger who is at the end. It's possible that Teddy Bridgewater could become available. I'd take h...

Cinematic Throwbacks: February 1991/2001/2011

1991: Okay, everybody knows about this movie. It was a big hit. It won a whole bunch of Oscars. I believe it's one of the very few to win Best Picture, Director, Actor and Actress. It spawned a ton of imitators (90s movies were big on serial killers). I don't know when I first saw it. Strangely it's a film I always forget a lot about when I haven't watched it in a while. I'm sure the thing that I liked the most originally was Hopkins, who I was not aware of until this movie. Basically every scene of his and every line of dialogue is iconic. You forget that he doesn't actually have THAT much screentime.  It's Jodie Foster's movie. She won her 2nd Oscsr for this and it's very well deserved. This is her best performance and most memorable character. This is such a forgotten gem of a movie. Steve Martin was definitely one of my favorite actors back then. (My favorites were all the big comedy stars of the era: Martin, John Candy, C...

A TON of movie reviews

Monster Hunter I did not even know until this movie ended that it was a Paul W.S. Andersen movie. Usually the tipoff with his movies is that they are complete and utter horseshit, with the worst cut action scenes possible and often Milla Jovovich stars. Well, this one is slightly different. Jovovich is here, but I could at least sort of follow the action, and the movie is not quite that awful. It still ain't good. It's a video game adaptation about this other world on earth where big monsters live. It's nonsense, kind of a hodgepodge of many other better action movies. The dialogue is atrocious. They cast Meagan Good then kill her off quick. Half the movie is Jovovich and Tony Jaa trying to communicate even though neither speaks the other's language. But the fx aren't bad. Jovovich and Jaa handle the action well. And you get to see Ron Perlman wear a hilarious wig and swing a fire axe at a dragon. News Of The World Paul Greengrass would seem a strange fit to direct ...

Dissecting Justin Timberlake's FAKE apology

Image
"I have seen the messages, tags, comments, and concerns and I want to respond." Oh, you JUST saw them, you pencil-dicked fuckwad? People have been coming at you for your disgusting misogyny and ripping off black culture for years. "I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem" 2nd sentence and this already ceases to be an apology. Contributed? No, it was YOU, ASSHOLE! ALL YOU! Also, he doesn't bother to cite any specific actions or problems.  "where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right," Spoke out of turn is a strange way to describe repeatedly bragging in public about fucking Britney, often in graphic detail. "I understand that I fell short in these moments" Oh right. Moments. They were just isolated moments and not a well documented pattern of behavior.  "and benefitted from a system that condones misogyny and racism" You still benefit today. The ...

Beautiful Girls turns 25 (BONUS cinematic throwback)

Image
February 10th, 1996. I walked into the old Mall of America General Cinema to watch this movie. This movie was on my radar. I knew Natalie Portman was in it. I was already hooked on her cause of The Professional, but I still didn't know if she was just going to be a one and done basically, as a couple of my early actress crushes had simply vanished. But then this movie happens, and I knew at that point that this girl was going to be a major thing in my life for a long time to come. If The Professional was Baby One More Time, this movie was Sometimes. No, I am not going to recount this era of lovestruck Natalie fandom. No way. It was silly and dumb, but still oh so memorable. And it really stemmed from this movie above all others. Now, this film has evolved for me over the years. Initially it was just a good movie with iconic Natalie scenes sprinkled in. Then I get a little older and start to relate more to the male characters. Then as many 90s things do it becomes this m...

Awful NFL season ends with awful Super Bowl

BUCCANEERS 31 CHIEFS 9 The 2020 NFL season is over. Thank god! A season that was almost across the board unenjoyable, and felt empty and largely felt manipulated, ended with the worst outcome imaginable. With a result that not only continues this 20 year nightmare but that will frankly hurt the NFL for years to come. I was not looking forward to this game. I knew this was going to happen. Maybe not in blowout fashion but I knew the NFL was going to see to it that Tom Brady got his 7th title. The house wins. The game was never fun. Right from the start the Chiefs seemed sleepy, like they weren't really in it. This team plays with swagger, but in this game they had none. Patrick Mahomes was under enormous pressure from the start. The Chiefs grabbed the 1st lead at 3-0 but then from basically the end of the 1st quarter until halftime it was a nightmare. The Chiefs offense remained lifeless. The Chiefs defense did manage a goal line stand that at the moment seemed like it could be a tu...

Cinematic Throwbacks: January 2001/2011

Image
Yeah, technically most of these movies were December releases, but I didn't see them until January. And frankly December was already loaded.  2001: Traffic hit during the peak Steven Soderbergh run, when he was hitting that sweet spot of critical acclaim.and box office success. Soderbergh pulled off the upset at the Oscars for best director.  I will say that, watching it now, the film feels more than a little surface level regarding its sprawling war on drugs story. It doesn't really have great insight. It's just a very well done film. Benicio Del Toro won the Oscar here, and he does have probably the most compelling part here. Michael Douglas is really good too though, and I could have gone for an entire movie of Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman's DEA agents. I thought at the time that Erika Christensen was going to blow big from this, but that never really happened. The Gift was a really big movie for me at the time. Primary reason was this was the peak of my Katie Holmes ...

I hope Kirk Cousins leaves Minnesota

I'm done.  Kirk, I truly hope you are under center for some other franchise come this fall. We do not deserve you. You do not deserve this. We have spent so many years waiting for a really good, stable, productive starting QB. In the years since Tarkenton retired, we have generally had good QBs, but it's always been something fleeting. We have lost NFC title games with Wade Wilson, Randall Cunningham, Brett Favre, and Case Keenum, but none of them were here for long. It was fleeting. The 1 time we reached a title game with someone who wasn't fleeting was with Culpepper. But he was at his best when the franchise was being run by a cheap ass, then he blew his knee out and less than a year after he was an MVP runner up it was just over. Over a decade passed until we just so happened to luck out and have a QB of Kirk's caliber hit the free agent market just when we needed a big upgrade. This was the kind of good fortune this franchise never gets. He even took less money to ...
