Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness spoiler review
Yes it's excellent. All MCU films are pretty much excellent, with the occasional masterpiece or just decent entry. I probably prefer the first Doctor Strange movie overall. Of the post-Endgame films I would place this behind No Way Home and Black Widow.
I feel like the advertising kind of let the film down. I saw something where Feige didn't like some of the things that were spoiled in the trailers, and I agree. Key moments from the final 10 minutes of this film were in the trailers. There was no reason to spoil the appearances of Professor X or Captain Carter.
Plus it gave off this impression that MoM was going to be a great big cameo fest, with variants of familiar characters, characters from the old Fox properties, etc. It's not. We get the Illuminati scenes, and that stuff is really cool. God damn do we need a Captain Carter series or film. John Krasinski as Reed Richards got a big applause. Monica as Captain Marvel was cool. And hey, for the 5 people who watched Inhumans we got Black Bolt.
But that's about it. We get a couple versions of Strange, but this film actually manages the task of feeling very big while being pretty compact. MoM is a better film for being lean.
I saw this in 3D, just cause that was the workable time for it. I don't think I've seen a 3D movie since before COVID, but I thought it looked spectacular. That whole opening sequence really throws you right into it. All throughout this is one of the most visually astounding comic book movies I have ever seen.
This is the first MCU film that requires knowledge of the Disney+ series. I'm sure you could get the gist of things without having watched Wandavision, but since Wanda's storyline here is basically Wandavision season 2 it would help. And the What If series has a few moments that carry over here.
Elizabeth Olsen once again is dazzling. I'm a little conflicted at having Wanda go full villain here, but she is no doubt one of the most threatening villains in MCU history. MoM definitely gets into some horror movie territory at times with how scary and ruthless she is. I would guess that this version of Wanda is now dead, but we will see *a* Wanda again.
I really enjoyed the character America Chavez, played by the very likable and engaging Xochitl Gomez. I liked her power and how it was visualized with the star-shaped portal. She has nice rapport with Cumberbatch.
I always like Wong. The always lovely Rachel McAdams feels a little superfluous at points here, but the alternate version of her pays off.
Marvel brought in Sam Raimi after Scott Derrickson left the film, and they really let Raimi be Raimi. Those demon souls at the climax are straight out of Drag Me To Hell. They even used Evil Dead font for the closing title. This is a very weird and idiosyncratic film for a giant blockbuster. We even get a great Bruce Campbell cameo.
And hey, apparently Charlize Theron is now in the MCU. Let's go!
At least Black Bolt's storyline was better in MoM than it was in Inhumans. I was hoping that Quake would show up. I was torn because I was kinda rooting for Wanda because she just wanted to be with her boys, I may have cried, okay I did. I loved it when Peggy said "I could do this all day" but I was sad when she died. Don't mess with my Peggy.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the movie. I do want to know more about America Chavez.
