Best Films of the Decade: Redone top 10s
Overall best of list coming soon, but I figured I'd do new year by year lists first.
1. Inception. Peak Christopher Nolan both in concept and execution.
2. Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Aside from a few MCU flicks I'm sure this is the movie from the 2010s I've rewatched the most.
3. Black Swan. Natalie won an Oscar. She should have won ten.
4. Kick Ass. Better than Deadpool.
5. The Social Network. Pretty sure this wasn't in my original top 10, but it's only grown in stature over the years.
6. Easy A. When Emma Stone removed all doubt of her superstardom.
7. The Book Of Eli. Denzel at his absolute badass best. Amazing visuals and score.
8. True Grit. One of the best westerns ever. Launched Hailee Steinfeld.
9. Blue Valentine. Not the most cheerful watch, but peak performances by Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling.
10. Toy Story 3. The 4th one was fine, but they really had already finished the series off perfectly.
2011:
1. Moneyball. The deacde's best sports movie. Peak Brad Pitt.
2. Thor. Even now this holds up as one of the MCU's best origin films.
3. Hugo. A wildly underappreciated Scorsese gem.
4. 50/50. Top notch dramedy with Joseph Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogen.
5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Kicked off the decade's most underrated franchise.
6. The Artist. Everybody loved this, then it won Best Picture and suddenly everybody hated it. Well screw the haters, this movie is a start to finish delight.
7. Take Shelter. Michael Shannon gave one of the best performances I have ever seen.
8. Crazy, Stupid, Love. A very rare great romantic comedy.
9. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The best of the series aside from arguably the first one.
10. X-Men: First Class. A real shot of adrenaline into a then slumping franchise.
2012:
1. The Avengers. Even after many crossovers this one still carries the thrill of seeing these characters interact. Marvel Studios has gone deeper and darker and bigger, but it's never been THIS fun.
2. Django Unchained. One of Tarantino's very best.
3. The Raid: Redemption. One of the best pure action movies of all time.
4. The Perks of Being a Wallflower. A sublime high school dramedy. Peak Emma Watson.
5. The Dark Knight Rises. It's clunkier than its predecessor, but it nails so many big moments.
6. The Grey. The best of all the tough guy Liam Neeson movies. One of my favorite endings ever.
7. Looper. Rian Johnson's brilliant sci-fi action puzzler
8. Smashed. Still inexplicable to me that Mary Elizabeth Winstead was not showered with awards.
9. Silver Linings Playbook. Peak Jennifer Lawrence.
10. Moonrise Kingdom. One of Wes Anderson's many delightful bursts of whimsy.
2013:
1. 12 Years A Slave. A hard watch, but so captivating. Won a lot of awards and deserved them all.
2. The Wolf of Wall Street. As if Scorsese was given the directive to make the most entertaining film he possibly could.
3. Her. Somehow the saddest and the most uplifting film at the same time.
4. This Is The End. The funniest movie of the decade.
5. Gravity. One of the best big screen films of the decade. Even on the small screen the visuals are amazing and Sandra Bullock has never been better.
6. Inside Llewyn Davis. The Coens in the zone. Ranks right up there with their other classics.
7. Kick Ass 2. I will never understand why people rejected this sequel. It's just a tick inferior to the first.
8. The Spectacular Now. Shailene Woodley was perfection.
9. Spring Breakers. Brilliantly shot and scored. And who can hate a film that displays such Britney love?
10. Anchorman 2. Eventially this sequel will get respect. It ain't the first one, but it still made me laugh almost as much as anything all decade.
2014:
1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier. A true MCU game changer. It gave us the Russos. It really established Cap as THE guy.
2. X-Men: Days of Future Past. The peak of the X-Men franchise. Merged the 2 timelines expertly, with real stakes.
3. Boyhood. Richard Linklater's 12 year experiment was worth it.
4. Whiplash. Wasn't a horror movie, but JK Simmons played the scariest character I've ever seen.
5. Interstellar. Nolan at his most ambitious. Ending is pretty inscrutable, but the film is amazing.
6. Snowpiercer. One of the most original post-apocalyptic films.
7. Fury. Fantastic WW2 film that didn't get a lot of recognition.
8. Life Itself. Wonderful documentary about Roger Ebert.
9. Gone Girl. Fincher at his pulpy best.
10. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Continued the decade's most underrated franchise.
2015:
1. The Hateful Eight. Got easily the least acclaim of the 3 Tarantino films this decade but this was my favorite.
2. Avengers: Age of Ultron. Okay, it's 4th out of the 4 Avengers films, but that's just a reflection of the other 3.
3. Room. Incredible film. Brie Larson won her Oscar.
4. Creed. Maybe shouldn't have worked. Instead everything worked.
5. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Quirky and charming in all the best ways.
6. The Martian. Ridley Scott's best film since Gladiator.
7. Ex Machina. Brilliant sci-fi. The film that really launched Alicia Vikander.
8. Inside Out. Best Pixar film of the 2010s.
9. The End of the Tour. A forgotten gem. It's just 2 guys talking mostly, but you could watch it for hours.
10. Everest. Such a great man vs nature film. A film I always watch if it's on.
2016:
1. Captain America: Civil War. Big ideas. Big spectacle. Intro'd Spiderman and Black Panther. The best non-Avengers film in the MCU.
2. The Edge of Seventeen. One of the all time great high school movies.
3. Jackie. Natalie should have won Oscar #2.
4. Everybody Wants Some. Linklater's sort of sequel to Dazed and Confused was almost as much fun.
5. Doctor Strange. Another of the great MCU origin films.
6. Hacksaw Ridge. Just a tremendous story. Peak work behind the camera by Mel Gibson and in front by Andrew Garfield.
7. Rogue One. Showed the best so far of what this new era of Star Wars films can be.
8. Machester By The Sea. Some of the best acting of the decade.
9. The Nice Guys. Shane Black needs to do more movies.
10. Hell or High Water. Excellent small town crime movie with a superb cast.
2017:
1. Logan. Could not have done a more perfect sendoff for Wolverine.
2. Thor: Ragnarok. Might be the most endlessly rewatchable MCU film.
3. Lady Bird. Great writing. Great cast.
4. Dunkirk. More Nolan brilliance.
5. The Last Jedi. Easily the best of the new trilogy. Its stature only grows over time.
6. Last Flag Flying. Another forgotten gem that just got lost in the awards crush. The very best of Steve Carell's serious work.
7. War for the Planet of the Apes. Concluded the decade's most underrated franchise.
8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I liked it more than the 1st. Was funnier, had more heart, and it had Baby Groot.
9. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Frances McDormand in peak form. Brilliantly dark comedy.
10. Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot is perfection. Only that messy 3rd act kept it down a little.
2018:
(I basically did this on the blog before, in pretty much the same order. Plus it's hard to keep doing the 1 line synopsis)
1. Avengers: Infinity War
2. Black Panther
3. Vice
4. Mid 90s
5. Creed 2
6. Blindspotting
7. Blackkklansman
8. A Quiet Place
9. Isle of Dogs
10. Instant Family
