Kwesi's 1st Vikings draft is rock solid
Nothing will determine the fate of the Kwesi Adofo-Mensah era of Vikings football more than what happens in the drafts. It's the reason Rick Spielman is no longer in charge. His drafting went south too often, so he had to go.
Kwesi definitely had the microscope on him this weekend. And clearly a large percentage of a fanbase that is still sore over him not dumping Kirk Cousins for peanuts was just waiting.for.a chance to pounce.
How else to explain night 1?
The Vikings were scheduled to pick at 12. But they traded down, with Detroit, down to 32. There was also a swap of 2nd round picks, and we got a 3rd. By every chart that is used to analyze such deals, at worst it was basically a wash. But Vikings fans erupted in anger at Kwesi. Vile shit was said by an increasingly embarrassing fanbase. And for what? An okay trade? Oh but of course the receiver the Lions then took at 12 will go straight to Canton. Just like they all insisted Justin Fields would do a year ago.
When the time came for the Vikings to pick at 32, we grabbed Lewis Cine, a Georgia safety. Cine comes off as a true leader, and paired with his obvious skills he could be an immediate starter and future #1 safety whenever Harrison Smith is done.
Even here fans raged, cause they decided that Kyle Hamilton was the safety we had to take. I swear mock drafts warped these peoples minds.
On day 2 Kwesi again got his trade on, this time trading our 2nd for a pair of 2nds from....the Packers. Oh the fans how they raged again....over a trade we unquestionably got the better end of. And again decided the played Green Bay took will destroy us forever.
Then Kwesi dealt AGAIN, with the Colts, back up to pick 42, where he chose CB Andrew Booth, whose stock slipped some due to injury concerns, but should be in line for significant playing time immediately.
At 59 Kwesi nabbed LSU guard Ed Ingram, who should be very much in the mix to start at right guard. You don't spend a 2nd rounder on a guard to be a backup.
Then in the 3rd.round we got Brian Asamoah, a linebacker who will likely get every chance to fill one of those holes we have at that position.
So that's 3 players in 4 that should be starters pretty soon, with Booth right behind them.
Day 3 began with a trade up to nab another corner, Akalyleb Evans.
The 5th round might have been the best. First we grabbed Gopher Esezi Otomewo for DL depth, then grabbed Ty Chandler, a UNC RB who looks like he could be a major steal. Keep in mind that due to the devaluing of backs, players who may have been early picks now get picked much later. Chandler could make Alexander Mattison expendable.
In the 6th we got Vederian Lowe, a tackle, and WR Jalen Nailor, then with the final pick in the 7th grabbed TE Nick Muse. Obviously all are likely practice squad, but if Lowe flashes that could mean a 53 man spot.
This wasn't a sexy draft. We didn't prioritize any of the superstar positions (QB, WR, DE). It was a little meat and potatoes, but I think that's what was needed. And we saw that we have a GM who is not afraid to execute his vision, regardless of what a bunch of armchair GMs say.
