Last batch of October movies
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
I thought the first one was just okay. I think this sequel is just okay...but maybe a tad better than the first due to a pretty well done 3rd act battle. I really don't like Angelina Jolie, but she's very good in this particular role. It's too bad she's so often off screen in favor of a batch of largely dull supporting characters.
The Addams Family
There are worse ideas than taking this property and making it animated. But this thing is really bland and short on laughs. I liked the style of the animation, and the voice cast is strong, but I was pretty bored.
Judy
Renee Zellweger might as well have just held up a sign in every scene that read "Please give me an Oscar." Her portrayal of Judy Garland is such transparent Oscar bait that it kind of wrecks the whole film. It just felt very fake to me.
Black and Blue
Not a bad dirty cop thriller. These are almost always at least pretty good. Probably could have maintained the suspense better if it were a little shorter, and some parts flat out steal from Training Day. Some of the attempts to comment on racism and police are awfully heavy handed. The nitty gritty thriller stuff notably really works though, and it's about time somebody gave Naomie Harris a lead role.
The Lighthouse
Another A24 oddity. This one is from the director of the very good The Witch, but for me it's not nearly as good. As far as artsy horror movies about descending into madness go, Midsommar was much better. This one wore me out. Robert Pattinson and especially Willem Dafoe are good, although I could not understand a sizable percent of the dialogue.
Countdown
There's an app that tells you when you're gonna die and counts down to it, when you are killed by some demon thing. So when a few characters are told they will die within days they gotta do something! This thing is just lame. Not scary. Not funny. The deaths are uncreative. None of the characters or performances make any impact. It's a movie that exists only to take up multiplex space. It even has the audacity to sequel bait after explicitly showing how the demon was defeated.
Thank goodness I’m not the only one who doesn’t like Angelina Jolie. I feel so much better now.
