The weird deification of Kobe Bryant

Okay, look, I feel sad for his daughter who died too, for the rest of his family, and for all the other people who died in the crash.

But I shed no tears for Kobe Bryant. I don't gloat either. I am unmoved.

Kobe Bryant was a rapist, don't forget. He raped a woman, BY HIS OWN ADMISSION, but his legal team harrassed the victim so relentlessly that she stopped the criminal case and settled a civil suit instead. And of course if you're settling on a rape case you are fucking GUILTY. You don't settle on something like that.

I'm not at all surprised that the rape case is an afterthought at best since he died. It had basically been ignored for 15+ years already. And I don't expect that to be where the media and fans go.

But beyond that, a whole lot of people are losing their minds over this. I get that Kobe is one of the biggest names in sports in the last 25 years. But people were literally talking about this like it was 9/11. Calling for the Pro Bowl to be cancelled. Calling for the Grammys to be cancelled. Cancel all games. Shut down the country.

People want BOTH of his jersey numbers retired leaguewide. They want the NBA logo changed to a Kobe silhouette. Change the names of awards for him. Why not just rename the NBA the National Kobe Association? Rename the sport itself to Kobeball?

I don't think I have ever seen a response like this to the death of an athlete, and he hasn't even been an athlete for several years. I get this situation is pretty unprecedented. But get a grip, people. Admire the athletic achievements, but stop deifying a rapist.

  1. Thank you!! I knew you’d be the voice of reason. He is a rapist and I might scream if I see one more person say she was in it for the money grab. He later admitted to it. I read someplace the last time the NBA canceled all their games was when Kennedy was assassinated so canceling games league wide was a silly idea. And retiring his number is dumb. He didn’t break any barriers like Jackie Robinson.
