Reviews (yep, still doin em)
CAPONE (2020)
I don't know why Josh Trank chose this as his "comeback" directorial effort after the failed Fantastic Four relaunch. I don't know why Tom Hardy agreed to star in it when the whole performance is done in an unintelligible mumble growl. I mean, it's at least a novel idea for a biopic, it shows Capone right at the end, but man is it a hard movie to sit through.
WORDS ON BATHROOM WALLS (2020)
Another entry into the "sick kids romance" genre. In this case only the guy is sick. He has schizophrenia. The lead actor is pretty good in a tough role. His love interest is the wonderful Taylor Russell from Waves, who I am very much buying stock in. They have fun chemistry. It bugged me that the whole 3rd act exists solely so he can go off his meds for no reason. Dude, just take your pills.
HIGH ANXIETY (1977)
I would probably have liked this more if I had more personal knowledge of the Hitchcock films being spoofed here (although I did catch some of the references). Still some inspired silliness here.
THE AGE OF INNOCENCE (1993)
Granted, a period romance is not really my zone anyway, but man was this movie boring. No idea why Martin Scorsese made this, although it was fairly well received at the time. It does have quality performances by Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder.
DIRTY DANCING (1987)
Yeah I did kinda like this. Swayze at peak charisma, and Jennifer Grey delivers just the perfect kind of spunky innocence. I see why Britney was talked about back when they were planning a remake or sequel. Plus I've always been a sucker for "Time Of My Life"
MYSTIC PIZZA (1988)
One of Julia Roberts early movies. Also early Lili Taylor. Nothing about this really stands out aside from the "before they were stars" casting.
LOL (2012)
Probably the last thing Miley Cyrus did before her transformation, and her last stab at that tween type audience. It's an odd movie, cause it's more about mother-daughter drama (Demi Moore is the mom) and Miley's character is quite unlikable.
BREWSTER'S MILLIONS (1985)
A pretty enjoyable high concept comedy starring Richard Pryor and John Candy. I haven't been that high on other Pryor movies, but he was a good fit in this.
BACK TO SCHOOL (1986)
I also was not too enamored with most Rodney Dangerfield movies, but this one was a really good fit for his always riffing style.
10 YEARS (2012)
This high school reunion movie has an incredibly good cast, with a whole lot of stars just as they were on the rise (Chris Pratt, Oscar Isaac, Kate Mara, Aubrey Plaza, Anthony Mackie) plus a few more established (Channing Tatum, Rosario Dawson). It's kind of strange this movie is so little known. It's pretty solid but not hugely memorable. The highlights for me were Mara, Plaza and Isaac.
THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND (2020)
Pete Davidson is, rather surprisingly, a legitimate good actor. And there's nobody else out there right now like him, and his unique vibe really saves this latest overlong and rambling effort from Judd Apatow. It's not one of Apatow's best, and almost unquestionably.his least funny. It also takes half the runtime to even settle on a plot. But Davidson is terrific, as is Marisa Tomei as his mom. And the rest of the cast, largely unknowns this time, is good.
THE BROKEN HEARTS GALLERY (2020)
A genuinely enjoyable romcom, that sidesteps the cliches just well enough. Plus I could actually relate to this one a little bit. Star Geraldine Viswanathan has superstar charisma and comedic chops. I will surely buy stock in her.
