Carlos Correa skips town

As surprising as the news was back in March that the Twins had signed Carlos Correa, the news that Correa has now signed with the Giants was not surprising at all.

It's possible that there was intrigue over what team he.would go to, but the reality is there was never a doubt that Correa would be here just the 1 season.

The Twins botched it at every step. One, they failed to take advantage of having him for the 1 season, blowing the division race and then plummeting to a sub-.500 3rd place finish.

Two, they failed to see the forest for the trees, and do the smart thing, and trade Correa at the deadline. It was quite obvious they were not winning a title, and they failed to flip a huge asset for future use.

And finally, they failed to convince him to stay. Now, on this point there never was a chance. Correa said all the nice things during the season, but unless the Twins hugely overpaid for him he was never staying.

Now, it may seem absurd to see a 13 year, $350 million deal and offer a single critical word to the Twins about it. That contract is fucking ridiculous. Correa is good, but he's not all time top 5 contract good.

But this is the price of business in MLB now. Free agent contracts only go up. Teams that pay and vastly and provably more likely to win, particularly in October. The Twins are never in the game.

They naturally did their usual thing where they made an offer that was big, but just so happened to be far enough off of the best offer that they knew Correa wouldn't take it. 10 years, $280. Sure, a huge offer, but when you know it is just for show and you will never have to actually sign that check it is hollow.

Frankly, even if the Twins had matched or even gone above what the Giants offered, Correa likely leaves. Why? Because he also wants to win. Correa just committed the rest of his playing career to the Giants, because he knows that is a franchise that will make a real effort to win world series titles. He knows the Twins won't. He saw this rudderless ship of a franchise up close for a season. He knows that when it comes down to it, we have owners with no real drive to win. Owners who will never spend at the level that will make titles possible.

At least this experience may teach naive Twins fans a thing or two.
