Message Board Classics: 2005 NFL Season

Beginning of training camp (and other assorted preseason posts):

The big story as camps begin is all the holdouts. Some have signed and/or reported (like Javon Walker and T.O.) while others have not (like Brian Westbrook, Hines Ward, and Viking 1st rounder Erasmus James---GET HIM INKED!!).

Yeah, I really think Green Bay is gonna be terrible this season. The Vikes are very good, Detroit will be very formidable if Harrington steps it up with all those offensive weapons, and the Bears have a chance to be a sneaky playoff contender if Grossman stays healthy. The Packers could very well finish last.
I think Burleson's gonna be a superstar by year's end. I hope Udeze steps it up, but it seems like these highly drafted D-lineman never fully pan out (Alexander, Hovan, Clemons).

So, it's nice to see that Terrell Owens has officially pissed away every ounce of respect he earned with his Super Bowl performance. He was KICKED OUT of Eagles training camp for a week! I've never heard of something like this before!
Sayonara to Philly's Super Bowl hopes. Even if T.O. plays, he's clearly gonna be a disruption. Good news for the Vikings, Falcons, Panthers and Cowboys, cause all have greatly improved odds of reaching the super bowl now.
-Ty Law signed with the Jets. If there's justice he'll pick off pretty boy 5 times in their first meeting this season, but the new me holds out no hope of NFL justice. Still, this greatly improves the Jets chances of making the playoffs once again.

I urge everybody to try to catch some of these Terrell Owens interviews on ESPN. They are the funniest things I have ever seen! He's sitting there with his agent, like they're married or something, and the agent is giving all these smarmy rehearsed answers, and T.O. is rambling and contradicting himself, and claiming all these media conspiracies against him. Hey, did you know the Eagle players are all on his side? And hey, did you know I've got Jessica Alba sprawled naked on my bed right now?
T.O. won't talk to Andy Reid or Donovan McNabb, or the offensive coordinator. Wow, that'll lead to wonderful team chemistry!
T.O. is an absolute cancer for the Eagles and the NFL as a whole, but I hope this goes on all season, cause it is hysterical.

Um, I guess that was a poorly told joke by myself.
T.O. claimed that all the Eagle players are on his side in this, but that the media is only showing negative things about him. This is wrong just on the basis of how no Eagle that I saw said anything derogatory about him. Most were all no comment-y.
So his claim is absurd, just like my claim to have the lucious Miss Alba here with me right now. Although that would be extremely cool if it WERE true.
T.O. also tried to compare this situation to similar things done by Jerry Rice and Brett Favre. Uh, if there are any 2 players more professional than Rice and Favre, I've never learned of them.

Vikings preseason opener:

Vikings top Chiefs 27-16
The preseason opener was pretty dull, but it was nice to see Daunte lead one perfect drive. Good to see Travis Taylor play well. Good to see my boy Mewelde Moore play real good. Ciatrick Fason looked good. The revamped D was solid. I pray Edinger gets the kicking job.
Troy Williamson didn't play. Funny how he's hurt already. Nice draft pick.
Elsewhere, Rex Grossman broke his ankle against the Rams and is out 3-4 MONTHS! So scratch my "Packers finish last" prediction. The Bears are DONE!
The Patriots won their preseason opener. Their backup QB started and played real well. That'd be SO funny if it turned out it's the offensive system that's great and Brady ain't so hot after all.
McNabb spoke out against T.O. Donovan has become one of my absolute favorite players. Interesting note: this supposed "secret waiver" T.O. says he signed before the Super Bowl? IT NEVER HAPPENED!
Preseason game #2:

The Vikings lost to the Jets in preseason game #2 and really played like shit. Tons of penalties, several turnovers, and even an injury to Ciatrick Fason. Troy Williamson played and caught a TD, but that was against the 2nd and 3rd teamers for the Jets. He's gonna be a total bust, I just know it.
The Packers lost tonight to Buffalo, but Favre played well again.
Antonio Gates is a LOSER!! One good year and he holds out and now is gonna be suspended by the Chargers. I hope he suffers a Kellen Winslow Jr. and never plays again!
Cedric Benson is still holding out too. I don't blame him though, cause who'd wanna play for the Bears? Do the names Rashan Salaam and Curtis Enis ring a bell?

More preseason stuff:

Due to New Orleans basically being destroyed, there's a big issue about what to do about the Saints football team. Obviously the Superdome is unusable, quite possibly permanently, so the team needs a new home to play in. They're either gonna play at the Alamodome in San Antonio, or at the LSU stadium.
The interesting thing is that the Saints have been rumored as a possible relocator to Los Angeles. You gotta think that becomes much more likely now. There may never again be pro football in New Orleans.
----------------------------
Elsewhere, the preseason is thankfully almost done. The Patriots lost big tonight, so that's always good. Favre hurt his ankle, but stayed in the Packer game. Peter Warrick got cut by Cincy and signed with Seattle, where he will now be unable to catch the ball. Corey Simon signed with the Colts, where he'll watch from the sidelines as Peyton wets himself against Belichick again. Peerless Price looks to sign with Dallas.

Season Predictions:

AFC EAST:
1. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 16-0
Oh yes, they've tormented me for years now. Winning literally every game is all that's left.
2. NEW YORK JETS 11-5
Adding Ty Law is big. Getting Coles back is big. They can do big things as a team if they can avoid those 2 or 3 puzzling losses they always seem to suffer.
3. BUFFALO BILLS 7-9
McGahee and the defense will make them competitive, but Losman needs to prove to me that he's worthy of being handed a starting spot.
4. MIAMI DOLPHINS 3-13
They'll probably be competitive, but again they have no QB so they won't be able to score points. They CAN probably score some killer weed though!
AFC NORTH:
1. BALTIMORE RAVENS 11-5
They burned me last year, but I'm back on the bandwagon. Boller made progress last year (and now he's got Derrick Mason and the rookie Clayton), and they'll have Lewis the whole way. And the D remains the best in the NFL.
2. CINCINNATI BENGALS 10-6
The key is reversing the trend of slow starts to the seasons. Early wins and this team is heading to the playoffs.
3. PITTSBURGH STEELERS 10-6
Last year was one of those perfect seasons (until the bitter end of course). Ben will have a bumpier year (no DysPlexico), but a playoff spot is certainly possible.
4. CLEVELAND BROWNS 4-12
Crennell will have this team very good in a few years. For now though, they'll be in the Matt Leinart hunt.
AFC SOUTH:
1. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS 13-3
Same old. The offense will be unstoppable (except for one game). The D will be better with Corey Simon. Easy division means plenty of cheap wins.
2. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 8-8
For a team on the verge of the playoffs, they didn't really improve much. And last year they had a lot of luck.
3. HOUSTON TEXANS 6-10
They remain the most non-descript team in the NFL.
4. TENNESSEE TITANS 3-13
McNair should've retired. This depleted team has nothing left.
AFC WEST:
1. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 10-6
The offense can still be scary, and they've upgraded the defense to at least respectibility.
2. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS 10-6
My gut tells me they're gonna tumble, but that offense is still excellent, and I can't imagine Brees sucking again after his breakout year. But they won't sneak up on teams this year either.
3. DENVER BRONCOS 8-8
Really, who wants them in the playoffs again anyway?
4. OAKLAND RAIDERS 5-11
They could be fun to watch, but adding Moss does not make them a playoff threat.
Playoff Seeds:
1-Patriots
2-Colts
3-Ravens
4-Chiefs
Wild Cards:
5-Jets
6-Bengals
Wild Card Round:
Ravens over Bengals
Jets over Chiefs
Divisional Playoffs:
Patriots over Jets
Colts over Ravens
AFC Championship:
Patriots over Colts (it'll magically snow again just during the game)
NFC EAST:
1. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 10-6
T.O. WILL be a distraction, no question, making this the team a lot of people thought they'd be last year.
2. DALLAS COWBOYS 10-6
All the offseason moves were right (Bledsoe, Price). And hey, trust Parcells.
3. WASHINGTON REDSKINS 6-10
May not be quite as pathetic on offense this year. That's the best compliment I've got for em.
4. NEW YORK GIANTS 6-10
I saw little from Eli to expect some breakout season. And this team still has little else.
NFC NORTH:
1. MINNESOTA VIKINGS 11-5
Even with the loss of Matt Birk, this should be one of the best offenses. Adding Koren Robinson now gives them a scary WR corps. Mewelde Moore is gonna turn heads. The defense looks improved enough. They don't need to be top 10. Culpepper could be the MVP. If they had a real coach they'd be Super Bowl bound.
2. DETROIT LIONS 10-6
The Garcia loss scares me, but Harrington could be this year's Brees very easily. And the D has been improved too.
3. GREEN BAY PACKERS 6-10
Brett Favre could have another great year. But unless he can play all 11 spots on defense too it won't matter. Teams will carve them up all year long, and they don't have a home field advantage anymore.
4. CHICAGO BEARS 5-11
The NFL's version of the Twins. They won't give up much, but won't score either. I actually think Orton could be alright though.
NFC SOUTH:
1. CAROLINA PANTHERS 11-5
No team's been as injury ravaged as they were last year, and they STILL were one win from making the playoffs. John Fox is a fantastic coach. Delhomme loses Muhsin, but gets Steve Smith back. They're back on track.
2. ATLANTA FALCONS 8-8
They'd seem like a playoff lock. Uh, no! They could seriously start 0-7. Their schedule is BRUTAL! Vick still hasn't quite mastered the offense. If they are .500 at Halloween they can make the playoffs.
3. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS 8-8
Hard to know how they'll play the season. I wouldn't be shocked if they were inspired and put it all together finally. But they could also implode.
4. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS 5-11
There's not much left here. Below average offense, and the D isn't what it used to be by a long shot.
NFC WEST:
1. ARIZONA CARDINALS 9-7
I believe Kurt Warner still has something left, and if he does, that offense can be very good. The D is average, but Zona is always a tough place for opponents to win.
2. ST.LOUIS RAMS 8-8
The offense will score, the D will be mediocre, and there will be head-scratching wins and losses both.
3. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS 8-8
All they do is underachieve. And the Rams own them.
4.SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS 3-13
Tim Rattay could pull a Drew Brees, but he's got no weapons. Another long year ahead.
Playoff Seeds:
1-Panthers
2-Vikings
3-Eagles
4-Cardinals
Wild Cards:
5-Cowboys
6-Lions
Wild Card Round:
Eagles over Lions
Cowboys over Cardinals
Divisional Playoffs:
Panthers over Cowboys
Eagles over Vikings
NFC Championship:
Panthers over Eagles
SUPER BOWL:
PATRIOTS OVER PANTHERS
Tom Brady wins MVP. And another part of me dies.

TNF opener:

Glass half full: The Patriots did not dominate a pretty lousy team at home.
Glass half empty: They win every game. This will be a loooong season.

Week 1:

BUCCANEERS 24, VIKINGS 13
Were these the Vikings? I saw a horrible offense with a dismal QB, and a strong defense trying desperately to keep its team in a game it otherwise had no business being in.
This was the WORST game Culpepper has played since at least 2002. He was absolutely godawful. I thought his fumblie-itis had been cured. Granted, he got little help from the o-line, which was terrible as well. The Bucs looked like the OLD Bucs.
Where was the running game? Michael Bennett is a sprinter, NOT a running back. Moe Williams is a running back. Mewelde Moore is a running back, yet he got zero carries.
TWO TDs called back by penalties.
But the revamped defense IS legit. Don't let the 24 points mislead. They are a totally new unit. I haven't seen a Viking D get after it like this in ages. Sharper took a pick back for 6. Smoot made a great catch on another INT. Pat Williams was a beast! They gave the offense every chance to win the game, only to see it squandered.
Now, Daunte will not play this badly again all year, so it isn't panic time yet.
Elsewhere...
The Packers are going to miss the playoffs. Brett Favre is finished. All the talk of personal trainers, or how his approach is different. HA! This is the same mediocre Brett of last year's playoffs (and the year before...and the year before...). Here too the defense did ok, but to no avail. Detroit can contend this year for sure.
The Chiefs are super bowl contenders (well, or would be if the AFC title wasn't set in stone already). They killed the Jets. Johnson's better than Holmes!
The Steelers took care of business. Their RB corps is the deepest in football.
HAHA! Sucka Mike Martz! Some things never change!! I knew there was a chance Rattay could pull a Drew Brees. Now, I'm not predicting a division title, but the Niners could be pesky.
Arizona puked all over themselves, although playing in NY on 9/11 may have been a tall task.
Yes, I now believe emotion can carry the Saints a long way. Everyone watching knew that last FG was gonna go through. Carolina had no chance in this game really.
Seattle sucked at the Jags.
Denver embarrassed themselves at Miami. What were the odds Frerotte would have a better day than Daunte??
Buffalo's D is amazing, and Losman did look solid. Explain why Tim Couch was run out of Cleveland and nobody ever bashes David Carr, who's accomplished LESS?
Cincy got an opening win. Next week they host the Vikes in a VERY intriguing game!
Oh, and my fantasy team is quickly in the shitter.

Week 2:

BENGALS 37
VIKINGS 8
(how fitting that my first attempt at this wouldn't go through due to some damn glitch)
Basically, what I'd said was a eulogy for this sorry football team, its newly awful QB, its hopefully permanently deposed starting running back, its not improved at all defense, and its sorry as can be head coach.
(I'll expand later)
Ok, here it is. The Vikings are DONE! There is not one slight indication that they will be able to turn things around. Every facet of this team is a disaster. Daunte has become Kordell Stewart, i.e. an elite QB who becomes a mediocrity overnight. He threw the worst pass I've ever seen today for one pic.
The receivers are a joke. So much for Nate Burleson being a star. Michael Bennett oughta never see the field again. He's awful. Mewelde Moore should start next week.
The defense seemed improved last week, but turns out THAT was the mirage. They were dismal long before time of possession became an issue. This looks like the same secondary they've trotted out there for ten years. They CAN stop the run a little, but so what if the QB gets to do whatever they want to?
Mike Tice's ass is definitely gonna be getting warm now. This team is far too talented to play like this. If they lose next week they're staring 0-5 at least.
But...the NFC north is so awful that they could start 0-5 and still be in it.
Green Bay is even worse than I anticipated. Cleveland? Brett Favre doesn't even look interested in anything other than cashing a paycheck right now. I've never seen him so aloof.
Chicago creamed Detroit, in the day's most stunning result imo. The Bears D is easily the best of the division, so if Orton comes along they've got a chance to contend. I don't know what happened to the Lions.
The NFC overall is even worse than last year. Philly is really good. Atlanta is good despite losing at nearly choking Seattle. Tampa could be for real. Nice offense, quality defense. Arizona was clearly a mistake playoff choice. The Rams suck even when they win.
THE PANTHERS BEAT NEW ENGLAND!!
This weekend was disastrous (don't get me started on my soon to be 0-13 fanasy team), but who cares with a joyous result like this!! For the 2nd straight time Carolina completely outplays the Pats, only this time Kasay hits a couple clutch FGs instead of giving them the game. And Delhomme didn't even play good. SO nice to see what Brady is when he's actually being pressured. It may be their last loss of the year, but it was still sweet!!
Pittsburgh is rolling. Indy got a helluva game from the Jags but won. KC held on against the Raiders. The Jets won ugly. Baltimore is another big disappointment. I will NEVER let Jamal Lewis near a fantasy team again!
Buffalo came back to earth. Denver beat San Diego, who are 0-2 but not a bad 0-2.

----------------
I listened to some of Tice's radio show tonight, and you can tell he knows he's one more bad loss away from being fired. The one thing the guy had going for him was his affability. He wasn't uptight and defensive like Denny Green always was. But he was lashing out at every single criticism.
If they lose to the Saints, he's fired on Monday. And even if they win, they'll follow it up by losing BIG at Atlanta, and then they'll lose at Chicago again. 1-4 at best!
Tice should've been fired after last season and they shoulda hired Romeo Crennel. The Vikes haven't had a defensive-minded coach since Bud Grant!
----------------
YES! When Denny Green was hired, Dungy came on as the DC, til 95 when he left to coach the Bucs. The Vikes haven't been good on defense since. Those few years with Dungy the Vikes had a good defense, and were really good at forcing turnovers. Those years though they just didn't have the QB play. They had Gannon (who was not at the level he would be later), Salisbury (a mediocrity and maybe the worst NFL TV guy out there), McMahon (who was done by then) and Moon (who was very much on the back end of his career).

Week 3:

VIKINGS 33
SAINTS 16
Well, had the game gone the way it did the first half for the ENTIRE game, I'd be ready to rave.
But considering the lousy play in the 2nd half, and the way the Saints crept back into the game, I think this game was no more than a temporary respite from a season that just will not reach its preseason promise.
Daunte certainly turned things around. And YES, he tucked it and ran with the ball on numerous occasions! Troy Williamson finally showed some skills. To the surprise of NOT me, Mewelde Moore established himself as the team's best back, even if they almost ignored him for all but one drive.
The defense played very well. McAllister never got going. Brooks was rushed all day long. Some guy named Henderson had a big day, but nobody else did.
But the Saints are woeful. Clearly that week 1 win can be called a major fluke now. One of these days, they might realize that Aaron Brooks is a mediocrity, or that Jim Haslett is a terrible coach.
So they're 1-2. I still think they have NO chance to win at Atlanta, and they're staring down 1-3.
BUT...their division continues to impress. The Green Bay Packers are the WORST team in the NFL, next to the Cardinals (um, didn't someone pick them to be division champs? *shame*). Favre is back to throwing passes so badly that I'm convinced he's on the take. He might have the worst final season ever for a future hall of famer. And it isn't helping that Ahman Green's mediocrity is finally being displayed in big neon writing. Or that the defense is still incapable of doing anything even remotely helpful.
For some reason I actually bought into the Bears for a week, but Cincy smoked them with ease. Orton did his best Daunte imitation.
New England beat the Steelers, but I felt no pain this time. Their last meeting killed my NFL fandom, and removed my ability to hope for Patriot failure. I just wish someone would acknowledge how losing all these players and still winning reflects on how great Belichick is, and how utterly replacable Brady is. Nice to see Big Ben lead em to the tying score though. I give a great big lameball to Bill Cowher for inexplicably calling a timeout on the last drive that handed the Pats the necessary time to get the FG off. Cowher's my favorite coach, but things like that are why he'll never win a super bowl.
T.O. beat Randy. Philly is weird so far though, and McNabb's injury problems are gonna be a big issue for them.
San Diego woke up and beat the crap out of Eli. I root against the Giants cuz of whiny Eli and Shockey, the most overrated player in the NFL not quarterbacking the Patriots!
Dallas struggled, but beat the Niners.
Tampa goes to 3-0. Cadillac is headed for rookie of the year. Atlanta won even with a dinged up Vick. Suddenly, the puzzling Panthers are playing catch up. They are the most disappointing team in the NFL considering who they'e lost to, and who they beat too.
The Rams can make any bad team keep a game close. Seattle bores me, despite beating Arizona big. The Cards are done. Frisco is no factor, though Rattay's making a nice showcase for his future elsewhere.
Jacksonville won a clutch game, and the Jets lost a clutch game. Those 2 things always happen. Somehow the Dolphins looked great again. I can't imagine them being a playoff contender though. Buffalo is gonna have long year. Losman stinks.
Cincy is 3-0! And not only is Carson already a legit MVP candidate, but the defense is looking like a Marvin Lewis defense. Now they've got a game lead on the Steelers too.
Indy won another low scoring game, but they might wanna show SOME concern about how they aren't scoring points anymore.

Week 4:

FALCONS 30
VIKINGS 10
Wow, what a stunner. The Vikes throttle a lousy team at home, then assume everything is peachy, and go on the road and learn that, sorry, you still SUCK ASS!
This game was never in doubt, cause the Vikes were never there. Vick did whatever he wanted. Dunn did whatever he wanted. Hell, even Matt Schaub did whatever he wanted. The defense did whatever it wanted.
Daunte was lousy, but this one's not on him. NINE sacks! Mewelde Moore played well too. But still, for the 2nd time in 3 games the team failed to score a meaningful point. HOW EMBARASSING to kick a field goal down 27-0, just to avoid being shutout.
And this was 30-10, but just like at Cincy it could've been WAY worse. Atlanta blew a few good returns with penalties, and had a few lazy drops.
This team will NOT turn the corner. If they win a road game all year I will be stunned.
But why is my mood HAPPY???
CHARGERS 41 !!!!!!
PATRIOTS 17 !!!!!!!
HAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I've been LONGING for a game like this for 3 years!! To see the Pats not just lose at home, but be ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED!!!!!! I rocked my Tomlinson jersey today and watched almost this whole game, and I won't have a finer 3 hours of NFL fandom all season!!! Brady does NOTHING!!! Brees and Tomlinson...and GATES!!!! They carved em up all day long. Oh let this be a sign, not a fluke.
Philly had just as impressive a win, making a huge comeback at Arrowhead. Uh, so much for the Chiefs new and improved defense. This was still the most impressive win the Eagles have had in a long time.
Tampa went 4-0, but let Detroit almost win it. Pollard was NOT in, that was a good call.
Cincy went 4-0. Not totally shocked they had a letdown againt the Texans. The Jags will knock em off next week, I think.
Washington won again. I have a really hard time believing in them, but in the NFC you don't have to be that good. Seattle is just pure mediocrity.
I sorta believe in the Giants. I hate Eli cause he's a whiny crybaby bitch, but he's really improving fast. Their offense is kinda scary. Oh shock that the Rams go on the road and puke on themselves.
The Saints won sloppy, but come on, it's Buffalo. JP Losman is the flop of the year! Buffalo might lose every game all year.
The Ravens won, but come on, its the Jets. The poor Jets are a disaster now. Herman Edwards is my boy, but that franchise just seems cursed.
Indy showed some offense (yay Marvin!), so they've gotta be considered the best team in the league right now.
Denver all of a sudden looks really good. Killing KC and now beating the Jags on the road. 2-0 in their division already. They're in good shape.
MONDAY NIGHT
Well, the Packers showed a little bit of life tonight, but it took the Panthers near choke job for it to happen. I'm SO disappointed in Carolina so far. With Tampa and Atlanta in that division, plus the likelihood of one wild card coming out of the east, they have to get it together fast or they'll be an also ran once again. Green Bay will win next week finally.

Week 5:

Onto week 5...
OMG! Hooray! The Packers won 52-3 and are now back! Everything has been fixed and Brett is going to lead them back to glory!
Yeah right!
These were the Aints of all time today! This romp could be seen coming a mile away. Sure the D was alright, but so what? Brett was excellent though. Ahman Green's lousiness was not missed, although Davenport then breaks his ankle.
Down in Atlanta, the Pats trotted out their most classic of victory strategies: play a team missing its key player and STILL BARELY win. Matt Schaub torched the Pats D, which is worthless now w/o Harrison. And Brady "led" another glorious winning drive...for a field goal. Funny, I don't recall Joe Montana needing a ludicrously sloppy pass interference penalty to win games. The Falcons gave up at the end, letting them set up for a FG that was a lock to go through. Vick's expression said it all. The media love fest for Brady is becoming sickening. It is a SYSTEM!! Plug in any back or receiver and nothing will change. Brady gets his knee blown out and the backup will do just fine. UGH!
Where was Philly? They got destroyed by Dallas, one of those real up and down teams.
Seattle beat the Rams in a surprise to me. Indy's gonna have some fun against the Rams next week.
Indy was kinda average, but they won, and crushed Alex Smith.
Detroit beat the disaster that is the Ravens. Baltimore might be the worst team in the NFL.
No wait, the Texans are the worst team. Titans whipped them up!
Chicago blew a game to the Browns, playing just lousy enough on offense that I'm convinced Orton throws 6 touchdowns next week!
Carolina continues to disappoint me even in victory. Classic example of playing down to the opponent. they won't make the playoffs playing that way.
Tampa proved that they are nothing w/o Cadillac. Vinny and the Jets beat em.
Buffalo plugged in a fairly competent QB and proved how mediocre Miami really is.

Week 6:

BEARS 28
VIKINGS 3
You know, it becomes reundant to do my Viking recaps when every game is the same. This team is easily at the lowest point in its 45 year history.
Who cares about the sex cruise? I'm just annoyed they didn't invite me along. But apparantly this team only knows how to score OFF the field. Maybe if the Bears had been dressed like strippers and hookers the Vikes would've had a better shot to win.
Daunte Culpepper should be benched. This was one of those losses that can be pinned entirely on him. He was atrocious today, wildly overthrowing receivers, including one wide open TD. And the picks were dreadful.
Mike Tice just leaves him in there no matter how bad he does. It's like he has total immunity from his actions (hmm, sounds familiar somehow!). Tice should be fired immediately. This debacle has gone on long enough, and anyone watching this game today saw the team clearly QUIT on him. Look, he's done after the year anyway, so why not give someone else the controls the rest of the way. It's not like they can have a worse loss this season than today.
Elsewhere...
Once more some joy was delivered as the Patriots lost. Denver crushed them early, then nearly gave the game right back to em. But how lovely to see what Tom Brady is when he's actually being pressured. He's a solid pocket passer, no doubt, but put a little actual heat on him and he crumbles like a little beeyatch! Then Denver stopped doing that and the comeback was on, but Plummer got em out of that pickle.
Buffalo is tied with the Pats at 3-3. The Vinny comeback story lasted exactly one week. Now the Jets stink again. Holcomb is saving the Bills now.
Tommy Maddox was the only QB whose day was worse than Daunte's. OMFG!!! I felt sad for the poor guy, I mean, he was just dismal. Completely gave the game to the Jags. the Jags are very much in the playoff hunt.
I continue to be impressed by Cincy. A nice win over the Titans, and now they host the Steelers next week and could up 3 games in the win column!!
The Chiefs D is clearly mediocre again, but they won. The Skins are a solid team though, I'll finally give em props. The Chargers won over the Raiders, which I actually did not expect. I want the Chargers to stay in this thing very badly.
The Bucs got back on track. Miami is settled back into mediocrity. Who gives a fudge about Ricky Williams??
The Panthers disappointed me in victory yet again!! Detroit still may be a playoff team. How scary is that???
The Cowboys beat the Giants. Dallas could easily be undefeated right now. Atlanta played really badly and almost lost to the Saints. Clearly Atlanta is a bit overrated.

POWER POLL
We're about a third of the way through the season now, so here's my rankings of the NFL's best and worst teams:
BEST
1. Colts: Hard to argue with 6-0
2. Bengals: They're convincing me more and more every week.
3. Cowboys: They could so easily be undefeated.
4. Broncos: All their wins are against good teams.
5. Steelers: They need Ben back badly though.
6. Eagles: The Dallas loss was bad, but I won't ever count them out.
7. Chargers: It will be a crime if they miss the playoffs.
8. Falcons: Inconsistent, but they can play with anybody.
9. Buccaneers: 5-1 is better than anyone expected, but now they're gonna have Simms starting.
10. Jaguars: They pound everyone, win or lose.
WORST
1. Texans: No wins, and no future.
2. Vikings: UGH!
3. 49ers: This was expected.
4. Packers: Still think they're hapless.
5. Saints: Terribly inconsistent.
6. Cardinals: Why did I pick them to win the NFC west?
7. Ravens: Jamal Lewis is KILLING my fantasy team!
8. Bears: Anyone can beat the Vikings.
9. Lions: If they get Garcia back they've got a chance to be solid.
10. Titans: Playing hard, but fruitlessly.

Week 7:

VIKINGS 23
PACKERS 20
Its appropriate I was still in the bathroom when this game ended, cause both these teams need to be flushed down the toilet.
A close game between two of the worst teams I've ever seen does not a good game make. It was wonderful once the game ended, being able to see the end of Eagles-Chargers, and see 2 actual NFL teams. Compared to them, the Vikes and Pack are like high school teams.
All this result does is anger me, cause now everyone will suddenly develop amnesia regarding what this Viking team really is. I hope for embarrassments, cause I want Tice FIRED! All this game showed was that Green Bay is 3 points shittier than they are! These are still the pathetic Vikings, who can't even show up on the road, but who can beat lousy teams at home, and usually only if that team hands it to them.
The first half was absolutely comical. I've never laughed at a Viking team more. And it was funny because I KNOW how awful the Packers are. So to see them carve through the Vikes was hysterical. The 2nd half was simply confirmation of the Packers futility! I've watched the Packers all year too. I know their defense is ridiculously bad. So for the Vikes to score some points on em is not even remotely resembling an accomplishment. Not to me.
The Packers basically sat on the ball in the 2nd half. The one time they did decide to try moving the ball, Favre led em right down there for a FG. And he did this all on his own. Favre was great today, with maybe his best game in 2 years. But anything he, or anyone on either team did well HAS to be followed by a "yeah, but they were playing..."
Edinger's kick was cool. I know Aaron Elling never woulda hit that. Daunte ran it some. Mewelde Moore finally gets his 1st TD (after I put him on my fantasy bench of course). Koren Robinson showed some kick return spark. BUT...it was the Packers they were playing!
The Vikings may again think everything is solved, as they did after beating the Saints, but only the most delusional Viking rubes will agree with them.
As for Green Bay, they are finished. Maybe 3 wins for them all season. Ahman Green was lost to injury, although he's total mediocrity anyway. Ferguson was lost too. Nobody's ever heard of anyone on the defense except for KGB. They will finish last. The Vikings will join them as they watch the playoffs from home.
Elsewhere...
Poor San Diego. I LOVE those guys for what they did to the Patriots, but they lose another close game and probably will miss the playoffs. Philly's kind of weird this year, but they've had early struggles before and come back to make playoff runs.
I don't like Eli Manning, but he made a great rally to beat Denver. Dallas absolutely choked another one away to Seattle. The Rams won w/o Bulger, BUT...it was the Saints. The Redskins smoked Frisco. Brunell really has made a good comeback this year, and now if they can get Portis going look out!
Detroit won with Garcia at QB. Chicago beat the woeful Ravens. They play next week for nfc north supremacy! lol
The Steelers, as they say, made a statement against the Bengals. I guess the Bengals aren't quite there yet. But Ben just does not lose, unless its to the Patriots.
Oakland took care of Buffalo, who showed that they're still mediocre.
The Colts again started slow, but ended up beating Houston handily.

Week 8:

PANTHERS 38
VIKINGS 13
I wonder what all those idiots who thought last week's game meant something are thinking now?
The Vikes returned to their tried and true formula for NON success today. The Panthers almost tried to let the Vikes stay in the game, but once Daunte got knocked out that became impossible.
Everything that happened in this game happened already against Cincy, Atlanta and Chicago. No need rehashing everything.
Brad Johnson is likely the QB now the rest of the season, or most of it. That injury to Daunte looked pretty nasty. This makes the team even less dangerous. With Daunte they could catch fire for one game possibly and upset someone, but not with Johnson. They are now gonna be lucky to go 6-10.
Elsewhere...
*sigh* Well, it looked ever so briefly that I was gonna have real reason to feel secure that the Patriots really were not gonna win it all again. Losing at home to mediocre Buffalo woulda convinced me. Then the Bills choked, and gave the game away on a silver platter. And now here we go all over again.
Chicago is now in the driver's seat in the NFC north, after beating Detroit. The Bears D is very good, and Orton may not be great, but he's starting to settle in a little bit.
The Packers lose again. Brett Favre throws 5 picks. That team could wind up with the top pick in the draft. Cincy wasn't too impressive, but they're 6-2, and their best days are still ahead of them. As for Brett, well, that absurd last play says it all.
The Eagles are fast becoming a travesty. Denver is good, but they ain't THAT good! McNabb though is obviously not right with his injury. Philly has very little hope of making the playoffs right now.
San Diego got a must win. Brees was excellent. Gates is a monster!
The Rams second team beat the Jags. The Jags continue to puzzle. They can play with the league's best, but they can never just dominate an inferior team.
Tampa Bay embarrassed themselves, losing to the Niners. Something called Cody Pickett was playing QB for San Fran. Rattay is better than Chris Simms. He should start next game.
The Giants smoked the Skins. The Vikes play at the Giants in a couple weeks. Ooooh boy!
Miami beat the Saints. The Saints can't blame the refs this time. Oakland beat the Titans. Houston got their first win, over Cleveland.

Week 9:

VIKINGS 27
LIONS 14
I cannot take much more of this. NFC North football is unwatchable. These teams are so godawful that I'd rather be watching little league games.
The Vikings won today, but they won because of how awful Detroit is. Joey Harrington cannot play at ALL in the NFL. He may be the worst QB to ever remain a starter for as long as he has. He is a joke. It was painful to watch him in this game. Had Garcia been healthy, he'd have been playing by the 2nd quarter.
The Vikes ran the ball well today. Michael Bennett had his best game in a couple years. Brad Johnson was solid. But the 27 points is deceiving. Two TDs were gifts courtesy of Harrington turnovers. Another came following a long kick return. The Vikes still have no offense.
Once again I'm sure a lot of people believe they've turned it around. Next week at Giants Stadium those people will once again be proven completely wrong.
Elsewhere...
That's it. Green Bay might go 1-15. That game today was here to be had, but Brett Favre had another of those dismal games. Charlie Batch was Harrington-like, but he got the win. Pittsburgh is just mediocre w/o Big Ben.
Chicago beat the Saints, and are now up 2 full games in the division. Their schedule gets pretty tough, but they maybe only need 4 more wins.
Dick Vermeil has HUGE BALLS!!! I loved the guts to go for the TD at the end of the game. It fails and KC's season is in trouble. San Diego tried to give their game away to Bollinger and the Jets, but held on.
Carolina might be starting to really cook. They killed Tampa Bay, who are basically done. Forget the 4-0 start. Chris Simms is awful. Atlanta struggled, but beat Miami.
Seattle won big at woeful Arizona. The Giants took it to the Niners.
The Skins beat the Eagles. I'm SO sick of hearing about Terrell Owens. Way to blow up an irrelevant story just to promote your sunday night game.
Cincy is 7-2. They've got a tough schedule yet, but the playoffs are looking very likely. The Jaguars struggled as usual, but beat Houston.
And tomorrow night we learn nothing has really changed.

MNF:

COLTS 40
PATRIOTS 21
You know, I could really get used to seeing the Patriots get stomped at home!
For the first time this season I really have hope that the Patriots won't win it all again. The Colts completely controlled this game. There was not one minute where it seemed like the Pats were gonna win it. And Dillon played, so there's no apologizing for this win. Manning finally beat Belichick. For once a friggin snowstorm didn't materialize.
Now the Colts are nearly a lock for home field. They won't go 16-0, since they still have to play road games against Cincy, Jacksonville and Seattle, but if they lose more than 2 games I'd be very surprised.
The Patriots will still take the east, since that division is incredibly weak. But I think now we for sure realize that Crennel and Weis were a LARGE part of why they were so unstoppable.
My midseason playoff picks:
NFC Division Champs: Giants, Bears (they're improving as the season progresses), Falcons, Seahawks (#1 seed)
Wild Cards: Panthers, Cowboys
AFC Division Champs: Patriots, Steelers, Colts, Broncos
Wild Cards: Bengals, Chargers
Super Bowl: Colts over Falcons

Week 10:

VIKINGS 24
GIANTS 21
This was definitely one of the strangest games I have ever seen. This was the "on any given sunday" game of the NFL season.
Ok, first of all, this was a fluke win. It doesn't really mean that much more than the win over Detroit. Teams don't get 3 returns scores in one game. That won't be happening again. The Vikings did get just about every single break, yet still needed some hideous Giant play calling and a prevent defense to escape with a win.
The Giants are going in for the tying score. They're at, like, the 10 yard line, with oodles of time to go...and they SPIKE THE BALL? This saved about 30 seconds on the clock...and guess what? Those seconds cost them the game. It woulda been OT otherwise. Plus, after the Giants completely wreck the pitiful Viking offense all game long, they go into a prevent defense, and just let the Vikes go right down the field AND get out of bounds whenever needed. Wiggins did make one super catch too.
All this talk of an all-Manning super bowl? Um, we might wanna stop taking about that, cause he's not ready. Manning had been earning my props, despite my not liking him. but he threw 4 INTs today. The Sharper TD was a horrible read, not some great defensive play. There was one where Toomer just let Williams pick it off. And one was on a tip, where it shoulda been an easy catch. So it wasn't ALL his fault, but he also lucked out with a tuck rule-esque call. And Chavous dropped an INT too. Manning was dreadful.
Johnson didn't screw up. He got his head rocked a few times, but no turnovers. Of course, we can always count on Bennett for a fumble a game. Moore takes a punt to the house, yet he can't get on the field. The Giant D is pretty impressive though, other than the prevent.
Yes, sadly for us Tice haters, the Vikings are now very much alive in the division. All they really needed was to win A game they were underdogs in. They have easy home games the rest of the way, save for Pittsburgh, and easy road games. So this team will now probably eek out a division title, and Tice will never leave.
Hooray!
The Packers had their own upset win (and a much more impressive one imo), beating Atlanta. The Packer D has quietly improved quite a bit from where it was at the start of the year. Anytime you can hold off Vick and that running game is impressive. Gado is a decent back. If they had maybe 2 more wins they'd still have a shot.
The Bears kept a 2 game lead, beating the Niners in the wind. They did lose Benson though. And Detroit beat Arizona, which is so tough to do of course.
The Colts are 9-0. Kind of expected a ho-hum game there. They could lose at Cincy next week. Remember what Cincy did to then-unbeaten KC a couple years ago.
Gus Frerotte choked again at the end and let the Patriots off the hook. Denver whipped Oakland. Buffalo beat KC, who were shockingly bad. So much for the theory of momentum!
The Skins lose at Tampa, and deserved to for letting Chris Simms do ANYTHING. Gutsy call to go for 2. Gruden must've known the Skins were an upset pick of mine and were therefore destined to lose.
Seattle's basically won the west. The Rams are toast.
Carolina finally blew a team out. I know they crushed the Vikes, but they don't count.
The Jaguars thumped the pathetic Ravens. Jamal Lewis had his usual woeful statline.
MONDAY NIGHT
OMG!!! The Eagles just choked away their season! Up 20-7 with 3 minutes left and they lose. Donovan throws the worst interception since Eli Manning yesterday. Dallas wins in the same way they lost to the Redskins on MNF earlier.

Week 11 Sunday:

The best defense in the NFL resides in Chicago. WOW! I watched that whole game today and was astounded. That was one of the most impressive games by any team all year. I now no longer have any doubts about the Bears legitimacy, and I think they could be a real factor...for the super bowl!
Carolina's loss made the Falcons-Bucs game even more important. Tampa won again at the end. All of a sudden they're back on track, and Atlanta is in real trouble, with 2 straight losses and a couple tough road games coming up. It IS always hard to play in Detroit on turkey day.
Seattle won again, although they struggled. They're gonna get home field quite easily, but they strike me as a team like the Chiefs a couple years ago, who had a great regular season but failed in the playoffs.
The Giants got back on track as well, and pretty much ended Philly's hopes. The Redskins had a really bad loss at home to Oakland.
The Colts go to 10-0, outgunning the Bengals in one of the funnest games I've seen in years! Cincy's clearly still a year away from true greatness, although they gave Indy a go of it. I still don't think Indy goes unbeaten.
The Bengals lost no ground to the Steelers however, who started Tommy "HE gets a game check?" Maddox and got beat by the sorry Ravens. If they don't get Big Ben back immediately they will MISS the playoffs!
The Patriots won, but had to take it til the last play to beat the pathetic Saints. But the Pats lose at the most 2 more games. Miami and Buffalo are gone.
The Chiefs and Chargers opened up a can o' whoopin on Houston and Buffalo. Oh Drew, save some of those TDs for a week I need them!! Denver kept rolling towards a 2 seed.
The Jaguars won, and their schedule now is so easy it's hard to imagine them missing the playoffs.

MNF:

VIKINGS 20
PACKERS 17
Well, it's time to face a scary inevitability: the 2005 Minnesota Vikings are going to be a playoff team
For the 2nd time this year, what had been the NFL's best rivalry for years instead was a matchup of 2 incredibly putrid teams. Neither of these teams are any good at all...but one is going to make the playoffs.
For some reason, screwing a bunch of hookers on a cruise ship seems to have made the Vikings karma's darlings. Now everything they do turns to gold. They lose one of the league's best QBs, insert an over the hill statue, and suddenly are mistake free. Mewlde Moore at least continues to prove himself the team's best back. Their defense all of a sudden knows how to play a little bit, benefitting also from self-destructing offenses. When WILL the Packers stop telegraphing all their runs anyway??
Forget the Packers. They're in the Reggie Bush hunt. And they deserve to be. Any team that fails to tear this team apart deserves to lose. Any team that constantly draws a defense offsides and NEVER snaps the ball deserves to lose. Favre killed my fantasy team, but aside from that he was once again showing he's not the Brett of old.
The Vikings are just 2 games behind Da Bears. The Vikings have the easiest schedule in the world the rest of the way aside from maybe the Jaguars and Patriots. Hell, with Atlanta and the Skins faltering, they could even snatch a wild card. They could actually top last year's squad, which HAD been the worst team in NFL playoff history.

Week 12:

VIKINGS 24
BROWNS 12
Yawn. Another ho-hum win against a terrible team, and again they didn't even dominate. All they need to do is dominate ONE of these games to convince me they might be slightly legit. But this thing was 3-0 late in the first half before the Brownies decided to fold.
Romeo Crennell should be coach of the year if he's gotten 4 wins out of this pathetic team. Somehow they can't play pass defense OR rush the QB simultaneously. Wide open receivers all day. Trent Dilfer is finished in this league, and they have no backup.
The Vikings defense may be improved, but their competition has been a joke lately. The Giants game was a fluke of immense proportions, and their other wins are against the league's dregs. All these turnovers that the rubes are slobbering over? Gifts! You've got a QB with a twisted knee and you're running trickeration plays? Huh?
The good news for the Vikings? They're going to the playoffs for sure. They have a schedule so easy the rest of the way even a hack like Tice can't mess it up. And a lot of other NFC teams lost this week. The bad news? They'll probably have to play somewhere like Dallas or Chicago in the first round. Or maybe New York again. You wanna bet your life that they can win there again?
Elsewhere...
-Da Bears! Da Bears once again convinced me, taking out the Bucs in Tampa.
-Green Bay lost at Philly, as Brett Favre continues to go out on a sour note.
-Seattle beats the Giants in OT after Feely missed 3 game winning kicks. Ouch!
-Carolina eeked one out at Buffalo. Now they play Atlanta.
-The Redskins lost in OT to the Chargers. The Skins are maybe finished. The Chargers are still very much alive.
-KC beat the Patriots. Tom Brady threw FOUR interceptions!!!! HAHA!!!! He can't win games on his own!
-The Bengals beat the Ravens, although they gave up a lot of points.
-Jacksonville won again, but lost Leftwich for possibly the season.
-The Texans almost blew their shot at Reggie Bush and decided to choke their game away instead.
And let us have a moment of silence for my fantasy football team. R.I.P. you pathetic piece of shit!

OK, with one month to go in the NFL regular season, here are my power rankings:
TOP 10 TEAMS
1. Colts (they may be the best team I've seen in 18 years of watching the NFL)
2. Broncos (they do seem to be different this year)
3. Bears (best defense without question)
4. Chargers (on a roll now)
5. Seahawks (cupcake schedule leaves little doubt they'll have home field)
6. Bengals (D sucks but that offense is second only to Indy)
7. Panthers (but I still don't trust them)
8. Cowboys (they're so close to being unbeaten)
9. Steelers (but unless Ben gets it going quick they'll miss the playoffs)
10. Giants (2 fluke losses in 3 games could keep em out of the playoffs though)
BOTTOM 10 TEAMS
1. Texans (frontrunners for Reggie Bush)
2. Browns (give Crennell a bonus for getting 4 wins out of this godawful bunch)
3. 49ers (roadkill, but they play tough at home)
4. Jets (poor guys, the one year they coulda beat the Patriots)
5. Lions (gotten a coach fired)
6. Saints (they have an excuse at least)
7. Cardinals (sorry Denny, only the logo changed this year)
8. Ravens (I hate Jamal Lewis!!)
9. Packers (time to hand it off to Aaron Rodgers)
10. Titans (they'll be good again in a couple years)

Week 13:

BENGALS 38
STEELERS 31
The Bengals have not had a winning season or made the playoffs since I was in sixth grade!! But this game assured that both those bad streaks will end.
This was actually one of the most sensational games I've seen in years. I LOVE AFC football!! And these are 2 of my favorite teams of all time, AND it was a big game. This one had it all.
Carson Palmer may have clinched MVP with this game. His road stats are amazing, and now he's won a big game too, not that previous big game losses were really his fault. I also thought that despite the turnovers that Big Ben was excellent too. He didn't throw the picks til he reinjured his thumb, but he gutted it out and his throws really were pinpoint much of the game (especially that first Ward TD).
Now the Bengals pretty much have the north wrapped up, and with the Denver loss they could still get a bye week. I know I'd love to see a Colts-Bengals AFC championship. The Steelers are in serious trouble now. Holding Ben out of that Raven game could end up being the one that does them in.
Elsewhere...
Oh yeah, the Vikings played, but I didn't watch it. Ok, during the breaks of the other game I watched. I saw Garcia lob up the easiest interception in history, to seal a game that any team with an ounce of legitimacy would've had well in hand by MINIMUM 3 touchdowns! All the Lion fans were there for was to boo and call for Matt Millen to get canned. But the Vikes once again barely win a game against a shit team. Nevertheless, I GUARANTEE they will no doubt make the playoffs but WIN the division!
Chicago kept winning for now though, shutting down Brett. Favre's goalline int was embarrassing. Rodgers should be playing. My respect for Brett is dwindling as he hangs on like this.
The Colts are 12-0 easily killing the Titans. Now they get the Jags, who had to rally to beat the pathetic Browns. Still a tough game, and if they lose it shouldn't be a total shock.
San Diego and KC both win. My preference between these two is San Diego by far, but they gotta go TO KC still and stay up a game on the Steelers.
The Patriots had a very Viking-like win against the Jets. This thing was 6-3 til late 3rd. And lucky them, they'll host a Leftwich-free Jags in the wild card round. So everything continues to work out for them.
The Giants beat Dallas, pretty much owning the east now. Dallas may have lost too many close games to survive. Julius Jones is a dumbshit btw for not getting out of bounds.
Carolina smothers the Falcons, who are reeling. This was a rare impressive win for them, but both were divison games. They seem to step up and play their best in their biggest games. Tampa won cause Aaron Brooks sucks.
The Redskins beat the Rams in a game to decide who maintains an outside playoff shot.
And mercifully, my fantasy football season and career come to an end. Not soon enough!

Week 14:

VIKINGS 27
RAMS 13
Well, without a viewing alternative, it was back to watching Viking football this week. And I saw the same game I've seen the last six weeks. Once again they played a crappy team and yet still couldn't put them away.
The Rams are depleted by injury. Ryan Fitzpatrick is terrible. Stephen Jackson is just not good. Marshall Faulk showed he's still clearly the team's best back, yet barely got to play. They'd have won this game if Faulk had been the featured back.
The Vikings again owned the game basically, but there it was 13-13. And the entire 4th quarter was spent BEGGING the Rams to come back and win, but the dismal rookie QB kept throwing passes that midgets could intercept with ease. This is NOT great defense. These are unforced errors.
The Vikings have no offense. They were given a short field all day long. Koren Robinson is a helluva kick returner though, their best in ages. But despite this win streak, they still have shown nothing to indicate that they are legit. They just haven't. Anyone who thinks they can go into Seattle or Tampa or New York (last time was THE fluke of the year) and win in the playoffs is delusional.
But everything is going their way. Chicago went into Pittsburgh and was handled. The Steelers, I suspect, will now come to Metrodome and play like dogshit and the Vikes will win. But they will be the first actual NFL team they've played since the Giants.
Chicago's still fine for the playoffs, but I was the first to say the Vikes were playoff bound and I have to tout that!!
The Colts are 13-0 and are unstoppable. That game was 26-3 before a little prevent defense came in. Only the Seattle game is a possible loss anymore. They will NOT lose at home in the playoffs, and no NFC team can compete with them in the super bowl.
The Panthers imploded, as Tampa went in there and beat em easily. I haven't trusted the Panthers all season, so I guess this one made sense. Tampa looked dead a few weeks back, but now they're almost a lock for the playoffs.
Dallas came back and beat KC in a fabulous game that was almost as good as last week's Bengal-Steeler game. Drew Bledsoe is inconsistent, but when he's on he's as good as any QB in the NFL STILL! They're still in the playoff chase.
KC is still alive too, cause my Chargers absolutely blew their season by losing at home to the weak Dolphins. Classic example of looking past an opponent. They're in big doodoo this time!
Seattle kept rolling. The Patriots are beginning to scare me, although their schedule now is incredibly soft. But it's not gonna be safe til they lose in the playoffs. Their first playoff game btw is almost certain to be at Indy! Cincy played down to the Browns, but escaped. The Redskins stayed alive a bit by beating the Cards. Denver won ugly. They're falling back a bit. The Giants remain weird, as they had trouble with Philly.
The Packers and Lions squared off in an epic sunday night classic. Half the Viking wins have come from these 2 teams, and it's easy to see why after watching this game. Green Bay basically killed their Reggie Bush hopes.

Week 15 Saturday:

Patriots whoop Yuccaneers
Ok, I'm beginning to feel a little worried. Yeah, this was the first good game they've played all year really, and there are many easy ways to explain why Tampa stunk it up. Still, I won't feel secure until they lose a playoff game.
Giants beat Chiefs
KC drops another tough road game. Good news for the Steelers and Chargers. The Giants pretty much have the NFC east sewn up. I think NEXT year the Giants could be a dominant team with a more experienced Eli.
Broncos beat Bills
Denver's in the playoffs, and all but has the west clinched.

Sunday:

STEELERS 18
VIKINGS 3
Man, I just cannot explain this game today and how it went the way it did. I can't find a single reason why the Vikings did not win.
Oh that's right. This week the Vikings were playing an NFL team, with NFL players. Simple factors like this are why they were thoroughly thumped today and revealed to all the utterly embarrassing local rubes as a mediocre team.
And this was not even a top notch performance by Pittsburgh. They didn't run very well. Big Ben was just ok. They made some dumb mistakes. And yet they more or less dominated.
The nimrods who had actually begun suggesting Brad Johnson as an MVP candidate were shut up. Those red zone picks were as bad as anything Daunte did. Of course, we all know the real reason why so many were so quick to slobber over Brad and rip Daunte.
But facing a real defense, this offense was shown to be one of the worst in the league. Even the one time they were handed a short field (after a blown call on a muffed punt--Randle El was blocked into the ball) they only got 3 points.
I actually found this effort by the Viking D more impressive than anything during their win streak. I think they're pretty good. But they never really controlled the game or anything.
Tonight the Bears defense showed what GREAT is. They annihilated Atlanta, causing Vick to have maybe the worst game of his career. i LOVE watching that defense play. And look out, cause Rex Grossman came in and played solid. Better than Orton anyway.
This division is almost over now. The Vikings have to look at a wild card.
Atlanta and Dallas are almost through. Dallas absolutely did not show up at Washington. The Skins looked dead a few weeks ago, but they could even still win the DIVISION!:o It's basically either the Vikes or Skins for the #6 seed.
Carolina actually beat a team soundly! *shocks* Seattle putzed around but beat Tennessee.
In the AFC, I guess the Colts desire to go unbeaten wasn't TOO strong. That 4th and goal Manning rollout showed they weren't all that serious about winning, at least early on. The Chargers took advantage and stayed alive. I'm glad. That won't be their last home loss of the year btw. And I don't mean Arizona.
Cincinnati clinched the division!! Yay! The Jaguars continued their formula of playing down to bad teams. They barely win at home against the 49ers. The Chargers won AT New England and Indy. yet the Jags are going to the playoffs. NOT fair! The Steelers are gonna win out and go, so the Bolts and KC need miracles basically.
Lots of games today that didn't matter at all. Houston's trying to lose Reggie Bush. Miami's reached 7-7. they get a QB next year and they could be real good. How friggin BAD is Oakland???

Week 16:

BEARS 24
PACKERS 17
RAVENS 30
VIKINGS 23
Christmas brought two lovely gifts. The Bears clinched the NFC North, and the Vikings, blatant frauds for the last 2 months, were eliminated by reverting to all of the old mistakes that have marred every team ever coached by Mike Tice.
I did not get to see either game in its entirety due to family Christmas stuff. But I saw almost the whole second halves of each game.
I saw Rex Grossman prove himself the better QB in Chicago. I saw Brett Favre prove AGAIN that he is finished as a top level NFL QB. Yeah this was against a great defense, but he plays like this against anyone. RETIRE!!! Chicago got a little cute late, and almost blew the game. But they got their bye, and I'd be very curious to see them play Seattle in the playoffs.
Then came the Vikings. That win streak of theirs was not legit, but at least they beat the crappy teams layed out in front of them. But Tice teams always can be counted on to lose to bad teams. 2 years ago they lost to 4 4-12 teams to miss the playoffs. Ok, Kyle Boller's played a couple good games now. He still ain't good. Jamal Lewis is a joke. Ray Lewis isn't even playing. But 30 points got rolled up on this supposedly wonderful defense.
As for Brad Johnson, he wasn't terrible, but you knew he couldn't lead a comeback. And Tice got scared and passed up a 4th and 1 late in the game that basically led to the loss.
Four years of Mike Tice now. Not a single legit playoff appearance (last year they not only backed in, they crawled backwards in). Each year the same unimpressive wins and maddening losses. Even w/o Daunte this is one of the ten most talented teams in the NFL. But no playoffs. FIRE HIM!!!
(more next week, I'm sure)
Elsewhere...
In the NFC, look out for Washington. They're cruising, and beating playoff-level teams soundly. The Giants clinched a spot now anyway. Dallas got a couple X-mas gifts from the officials and stayed alive. Carolina still ain't in for sure. Tampa Bay eliminated the Falcons. I was the ONLY person who picked Atlanta to miss the playoffs this year! Tampa can win the south now. Seattle clinched home field by beating about 10% of the Colts, and yet it was still a game most of the way.
In the AFC, the Chiefs eliminated the Chargers. I love my Bolts, but they got what they deserved. KC won't make it anyway, unless the Steelers lose at home to Detroit. Can you say lock of the century? The Jags are in, but they are still frauds. Cincy lost at home to Buffalo. That could be GOOD though. If they fall to the #4 seed they get the Jags instead of Pittsburgh Denver clinched a bye.

Week 17:

VIKINGS 34
BEARS 10
Oh please. Forget this game, it was simply the most obvious phony win in a season full of phony wins. The only quarter the Bears tried in was the 1st and it ended with them leading 3-0. The Bears would've won in a landslide had it mattered at all to them.
MIKE TICE WAS FIRED! I hate this mentality around here that nobody should ever lose their job no matter how poorly they do. This move was a long time coming. I'm just mad this didn't happen a year ago. Then we coulda got Romeo Crennell and would be set. But Tice is easily one of the worst coaches in the NFL. He's taken teams with huge talent and done NOTHING. This was a Super Bowl-level team the last 2 years and went 8-8 and 9-7. I don't know who they'll replace Tice with, but I'm hoping Gregg Williams of the Redskins. If they go for an offensive guy I will scream!!!
What a blah final Sunday of the season. I don't know if ever before there were so many teams who didn't try cause they were IN the playoffs, or didn't try cause they were OUT of the playoffs. Just look at the scoreboard and you can tell which teams gave ZERO effort in week 17.
Playoff teams who didn't try: Colts, Bengals, Patriots, Seahawks, Bears
Non-playoff teams who didn't try: Titans, Falcons
Props to a team like Detroit, who was actually LEADING at Pittsburgh for a while. Or the Eagles, who led the Redskins in the 4th quarter.
Anyway, the Bucs win the NFC south and the Panthers destroyed the quitting loser Falcons to get the wild card. The Skins get the last spot, depriving the Cowboys of a shot. Obviously that week 2 meltdown cost Dallas.
In the AFC, the Steelers weren't great but won and got in. The Chiefs killed the Bengals, who didn't try. Cincy concerns me though, and I highly doubt they'll beat the Steelers.
It SO figures that even when the Patriots LOSE it's actually good for them! I rooted for the Patriots for the first time in years. I felt dirty. Now they get the easy wild card game and I'll bet ANYONE that it'll snow!!! OH GOD ITS GONNA BE THE LAST TWO YEARS ALL OVER AGAIN! NOOOOOO!!!!!!
I'm pretty sure that Brett Favre played his final game today. I just get the feeling that this was it. I'm glad he was at least able to go out with a win and a well-played game. I hope he retires now, before his skills erode further and the team around him continues to reek for years to come. It's been great to watch Brett. He transformed this die hard Viking fan (trust me, there was once a time when I HATED Green Bay and kissed Viking ass) into a Packer fan. He's my favorite player of all time and that'll likely be the case for a long time to come.

Black Monday/Wild Card Picks:

FIRED COACHES
-Mike Sherman: I don't agree with this one. He's gotten a couple lousy Packer teams into the playoffs. And it ain't his fault Brett doesn't know when to give it up, or that they had all those injuries.
-Jim Haslett: Like Tice, this was a long time coming. Chronically underachieving team.
-Norv Turner: A retread who never shoulda been hired in the first place.
-Dom Capers: No argument. He had 4 years and went absolutely nowhere.
-Mike Martz: Great coordinator, always a mediocre coach.
WILD CARD PREDICTIONS
SATURDAY
-Buccaneers over Redskins: Yes the Skins are hot, and Tampa is up and down, but they're really good at home. Plus, you never know if Brunell will be healthy. It'll be close.
-Patriots over Jaguars: Why even play this game? The Jags are the worst 12-4 team since that Packer team that got done by Michael Vick at Lambeau. Leftwich may be back, but it doesn't matter. Even if Bruschi doesn't play, this game is a foregone conclusion. Like last season's Colt and Steeler games, I expect to turn this game off by halftime.
SUNDAY
-Giants over Panthers: I picked Carolina at the start of the season, but I just don't trust them at all. The Giants are really good at home, and Tiki's gonna run all over the weak Panther run D.
-Steelers over Bengals: Cincy has no momentum at all. You'd forget they just won at Pittsburgh a month ago. But Cincy has peaked and the Steelers are peaking. This stays close only cause Cowher's teams never play great in the playoffs.

Wild Card Round:

REDSKINS 17, BUCCANEERS 10
This was a VERY well played defensive game, sadly marred by simply one of the WORST calls I've ever seen in the playoffs. Shepherd HAD that TD!! Two feet down AND two knees down. That means possession in every sense of the word. He was in the end zone with possession, end of story. Tampa was completely screwed, and I was rooting for the Redskins! The Skins D is really strong (no wonder Williams is a hot commodity), and the game at Seattle will be interesting. This game sold me on Chris Simms. He's gonna be an elite QB very soon. Poor Gruden, first the tuck rule debacle and now this one? At least he has a ring already.
PATRIOTS 28, JAGUARS 3
This game REALLY surprised me! I thought I'd turn the game off by halftime, but no. It was the middle of the 3rd quarter before I gave up. I hope that bitch Brady doesn't feel disrespected anymore! I'm one step closer to my nightmare.
And the Wolves choked away a win against the Mavericks. This night SUCKED!!!
PANTHERS 23, GIANTS 0
Where have these guys BEEN all year??? Man, when Carolina is on they are as good as anybody in the NFL, but from week to week they are SO inconsistent. They dismantled the Giants. For them it was like that Viking game where everything went wrong. Maybe these guys are just the type to play their best when it matters most, and in that case, they could still make it to the super bowl.
STEELERS 31, BENGALS 17
Ok, it really sucks that Palmer got knocked out on the 2nd play of the game, but you can't hang the loss on that. Kitna played great until he had to force things to play catch up. And Cincy got up 17-7, as the Steelers looked like the nervous team that hadn't played a postseason game in 15 years! But once the Bengal D weakened it was game over. Cincy's best days are ahead of them.

Divisional Round Picks:

Saturday:
Seahawks over Redskins: I think the Skins have a shot with that defense, but it's not a dominant enough one to stop Seattle, although Alexander has his TD record and is a selfish player, so he may not care about this game as much.
Patriots over Broncos: This is not quite as big a lock as the Jaguar game, but is close. Somehow I don't see Jake Plummer as Luke Skywalker, coming in to vanquish the evil empire. How is Brady gonna whine about having no respect this week, when Denver is 13-3 and nobody has talked about them all year? I sense another anti-climactic Saturday night on the horizon.
Sunday:
Colts over Steelers: I don't think this is that close. I think Indy's layoff will not hurt. I think they will play a great game and win convincingly.
Panthers over Bears: This is me shamelessly leaping back on the Panther bandwagon! I think this could be a classic defensive game, and at their best Carolina's D is almost as good as Da Bears. I do think THIS could be the true NFC championship though.

Divisional Saturday (oh what a night!):

BRONCOS 27, PATRIOTS 13
SAVOR IT! That was what I was thinking during the final minutes of this wonderful, exquisite game! I have DREAMED of this for 3 seasons. I have suffered through so much playoff (and regular season) misery because of the Patriots. Last season they almost destroyed my NFL fandom, and it likely would've been totally crushed had they three-peated.
But here came my new favorite NFL team, the Denver Broncos, and I will FOREVER love the Broncos for what they did tonight!
I was a wreck early on. Denver should've been up 14-0, but screwed up the 4th and 1 (what WAS that play?), and Jake threw a bad pick. Things began to swing big to the Pats and I was already feeling depressed. But then the Patriots began handing the game away, just as all these teams have handed the Pats games over the last few years. 2 turnovers and 10 points and a LEAD! Was the interference call bad? Sure, but FUCK THE PATRIOTS!!! Let's not forget they'd have never HAD this title run were it not for a bullshit thing called the tuck rule! Or the officiating at the end against the Rams. Or the interference non calls against Indy. They've gotten EVERY call from the stripes this whole time, and all they seemed to do all game tonight was whine like classless LOSERS!
Things looked REALLY bad in the 3rd. 10-6, and the Denver D has fallen apart, and here comes the inevitable go ahead touch...NO! CHAMP BAILEY! Champ steps into my permanent cool book by picking off Brady and going 100 yards (and almost doing a Leon Lett too). I was SCREAMING as he tore down the sidelines! I haven't yelled at a game this much possibly EVER! And the turnovers continued! And what justice to have that whiny asshole Troy Brown muff a punt!!! He's the player who began my Patriots hatred.
I got nervous again when they let the Pats go right down the field for a TD in like 3 plays. But they didn't choke. Every team chokes against New England. But not Denver! Lynch making the clinching interception goes down as one of the BEST moments of my sporting fandom life! "FINALLY" I was saying! I was smiling and almost crying happy tears! No more New England Patriots! I'm sure they'll be a nemesis of sorts for years to come, but the hope is back! To quote the Smashing Pumpkins, today is the greatest day I've ever known!
I don't even care who wins the super bowl now. It won't be the Patriots, and that's all that matters. THANK YOU DENVER!!!!
SEAHAWKS 20, REDSKINS 10
The Skins had their shot. If that guy Rogers holds onto that ball, he goes in and gives em a 10-0 lead. (you can never count on a guy with that name!) Seattle wins w/o Alexander, proving how Manning shoulda been MVP. Hasselbeck was good. The Skins offensive line was embarrassing. Brunell did great when he had a chance to throw.
Oh, and can we PLEASE get Tony Siragusa kicked off of FOX? He has never said a single interesting thing his whole life.

Divisional Sunday:

STEELERS 21
COLTS 18
A classic game, with SO much to talk about! I LOVED the way Cowher allowed Ben to actually play at the start of the game. EVERY time Ben's been allowed to lead the team with his arm rather than just handing off to backs all the time, he does fantastic! And clearly Indy was not prepared for it.
There are numerous ways to explain the Colts losing. My opinion is that the death of Dungy's son really took their enthusiasm away. Oddly this means their priorities are better, but a true champion woulda used it to fuel a title run.
The Steelers killed Manning all day until they sorta went into prevent mode. He must've thought he was up against Belichick today! But they made a good comeback, aided by a looney call taking away Polamalu's int. The playoff officiating has SUCKED this year! They were VERY pro-Indy today!
The Bettis fumble was shocking. I hated the thought of that being the last ever carry for a future hall of famer and an actual good guy. But the idiot kicker did his best Kris Brown imitation and the Steelers escaped.
Indy had it all there for em this time. Home field (which in the AFC is usually meaningless), no Patriots, and they go out early. I feel bad for Manning and Dungy. How could you NOT feel bad for em? They aren't going anywhere, but Manning's career is at the midway mark, so his chances are not infinite.
MAYBE this can be the year for my favorite coach Bill Cowher to win the super bowl. But how do I root against my newly beloved Broncos?
PANTHERS 29
BEARS 21
Raise your hand if you thought this would be the day's higher scoring game. LIARS!!!!
I predicted Carolina, but this was that weird version of the Panthers that I saw off and on all season. They shoulda rolled in this. NOBODY can say they thought the game wasn't over at 13-0, given how the Panthers played last week and given what we've seen from the Bear offense. But hey, Grossman proved himself the better Chicago QB. Too bad for him the Bears defense had their worst game at the worst time.
I don't know if Carolina can win at Seattle with Nick Goings at starting tailback, but I DO know Steve Smith is a monster and Jake Delhomme is a MUCH better playoff QB that the drooled over golden boy in New England.
I think both conference championships are toss-ups.

Championship Game Picks:

AFC: Steelers 27, Broncos 24
I can't wait for this game! I'm a huge Steelers fan, and I forever love Denver after last week. I'm rooting slightly for Pittsburgh though, cause I want Cowher to win a super bowl, and I want Bettis to have that perfect sendoff. I think they'll get that chance. You could say it'd be hard for them to win so many in a row, but just last year they won 15 straight. Ben has been on fire since returning from injury. The defense is peaking. Plummer will not all of a sudden revert to being Jake the mistake, but that blitz is gonna rattle him into at least one turnover. The home field edge is big, but Pittsburgh does have that look of a team of destiny.
NFC: Panthers 26, Seahawks 21
I know the odds of both lower seeds winning are slim, but there's no denying at this point that Carolina is a team built for the playoffs. 4-0 on the road in the playoffs for Delhomme is WAY more impressive than Brady's 10-0. Delhomme is a big game guy, and in his playoff starts he's riddled some excellent defenses. Seattle's D is ok, but let's remember they played the Redskins last week, and built that big record this year on the backs of the Arizonas and San Frans. Alexander is NOT a big game player, at least not so far, and he's hurt. Hasselbeck will play well, but he'll need a career game. Yeah, Carolina's got injuries, but they always do, and always seem to fight through them. Goings will do fine.
I would not be the least bit shocked if the home teams both won though.

Championship Games:

STEELERS 34
BRONCOS 17
Fantastic!!! One of my favorite teams and my absolute favorite coach are heading back to the Super Bowl!
I knew the Steelers were in great shape right from jump, when I saw that once again Cowher was gonna let Ben throw. I guess there's no reason to doubt that anymore. Cowher's a smart guy, and he realizes Ben is already one of the league's great QBs. And at least in THIS year's playoffs, defense alone ain't gettin it done. You need to score points.
The Steelers run of knocking off the 1, 2 and 3 seeds all on the road is the most impressive playoff accomplishment I've ever witnessed. Even if they fail to win in Detroit, Cowher has removed all doubts about his ability to win big games.
Back to Ben. His throws were amazing. All those great 3rd down conversions, and that perfect TD to Ward. I still think Willie Parker sucks. He fumbled twice today, although one was reversed incorrectly, and the other went out of bounds. That pass rush destroyed Jake Plummer.
I'm sure Plummer will get roasted over his performance, and he was bad, but he had almost no chance. And he did make some good plays to make the game kind of interesting in the 4th quarter. I don't blame him for the fumbles.
SEAHAWKS 34
PANTHERS 14
I shoulda known the Panthers would play another of their patented befuddling games at the worst time possible. Their schizophrenic season culminated with a pitiful performance at Seattle. Games like this are why Carolina wasn't hosting playoff games rather than playing on the road.
Seattle dominated from the start. Hasselbeck was great. Alexander was strong. I'm not gonna fellate their defense THAT much though. They did a great job on Steve Smith, but that was ALL they had to do. Carolina called me at halftime to see if I could play running back. They had NOTHING. And you could tell hey had very little left after their playoff run.
I picked Carolina cause they were my preseason pick. I was worried about the 21 points allowed to the Bears though, and turns out that was with good reason. As bad as Carolina's offense was, their defense was just as bad. Just look at that pass to Seneca Wallace. If Ken Lucas was in the game, he'd have picked that pass off easily. And they blew SO many tackles. They were very Viking-like tonight.
SUPER BOWL
I'm picking Pittsburgh. I want them to win very badly. I think it will be a close game, but ultimately the difference will be the conferences. The AFC is WAY better than the NFC. Seattle really had a pretty easy couple of games to get here. The Steelers have already beaten 2 teams better than Seattle, and with Ben's surge to elite status they are maybe one of the most balanced teams in football. Plus, I will be really annoyed if Cowher and Bettis lose this game. The football gods let Tom Brady win 3 god damn super bowls. Holmgren's got one. They owe Cowher one after all his near misses.

My list of the ten best playoff games I had ever seen at the time:

Alright, I'm just doing playoff games, cause I can't recall that many regular season games.
1. Super Bowl 32: Broncos over Packers: There may never be a Super Bowl like this again. You had Elway going for his 1st ring. You had this would-be Packer dynasty trying to repeat. You had the fact that Denver was a huge underdog and the AFC hadn't won a title in 13 years. And then you had an amazing game, with Elway's 1st down dive, and TD's gutty running and Favre almost leading the game into OT.
2. 1998 NFC Championship: Falcons over Vikings: Oh this one hurt. I cried actual tears at the end of this game. The 15-1 Vikings, the best offense ever that year (better than any Indy team), sure to go to the super bowl...until the HUGE underdog Falcons came in and ruined everything. I don't hear this game talked about much among the all time greats but up here all one needs to do is say "Gary Anderson" or "the knee" and we all know what you're talking about. This game was SO dramatic. Atlanta tying the game on the last drive, and then a LONG overtime. Amazing game, and the last time I was ever an all the way Viking fan.
3. 1992 AFC Wild Card: Bills over Oilers: Down 35-3, Frank Reich leads the Bills to the biggest comeback ever.
4. 2002 Divisional Playoffs: Steelers over Browns/49ers over Giants: On the same afternoon, 2 mammoth comebacks. And both went the way I wanted, which made them all the more unlikely. The Niners espeically seemed dead, but Jeff Garcia played the 2nd half of his life.
5. Super Bowl 25: Giants over Bills: The only super bowl ever w/o a turnover. Norwood's miss. Thurman Thomas shoulda been MVP.
6. 1996 AFC Divisional Playoff: Jaguars over Broncos: The biggest upset I've ever seen. Denver was the #1 seed, the Jags were the 6 seed in their 2nd year of existence, and were down 2 scores early. But somehow they pulled of the win at Mile High.
7. 2001 AFC Divisional Playoff: Patriots over Raiders: WHAT? I have the tuck rule game here? Oh yes, cause before it became the beginning of tyranny, this was a classic. How can you beat a close, dramatic playoff game in the nighttime snow?
8. Super Bowl 34: Rams over Titans: Would be higher except the first 3 quarters stunk. Fabulous finish of course, with Warner's long TD to Bruce after the Titan comeback, and McNair leading the final drive that ended at the 1.
9. 2003 NFC Wild Card: Packers over Seahawks: "we want the ball and we're gonna score" said Hasselbeck. Then Al Harris picked him off for six! Also, this is almost surely the last playoff win for Brett Favre.
10. 2005 AFC Divisional Playoff: Steelers over Colts: Could rise higher if the Steelers seal the deal on Sunday.

Hall of fame:

Troy Aikman: Can't argue with this. He has the stats. He has the rings. Sadly this clinches it that Brady will make it one day.
Warren Moon: Yay! For some idiotic reason he was not considered a sure hall of famer. Ok, he never played in a super bowl, or even a conference championship, but stats wise he's easily one of the most accomplished passers of all time. The first black QB in the hall too. Cunningham is soon to follow I hope.
Reggie White: One of the great defensive players of all time.
John Madden: I assume this is based in part on his broadcasting career, cause he only made it to one super bowl as a coach. Does that mean Barry Switzer and Brian Billick are hall of famers?
Harry Carson: Part of those great Giants teams of the 80's. I'd have put Derrick Thomas in ahead of him however.
Rayfield Wright: Hmm. I have the DVD "The Complete History of the Dallas Cowboys" and I don't recall him being mentioned ONCE.

SUPER BOWL 40:

STEELERS 21
SEAHAWKS 10
Recent years had nearly destroyed my NFL fandom. Seriously, go to the classics forum and look at my posts following the last 2 super bowls. I was teetering. Baseball was on the verge of supplanting pro football as my favorite sport. Those blasted Patriots were sapping me of all my enjoyment of the game. Had they won again my NFL fandom would have been gone.
Now, they got beat by Denver and that was spectacular. But had the Steelers lost this game to Seattle it still would've been another crushing letdown.
NOT THIS YEAR!
My favorite head coach, and by association my favorite team (or at least top 3 or 4) have won the Super Bowl! I've watched 19 super bowls now, and I'm not sure I've wanted a team to win more than I wanted Pittsburgh to win this game. Maybe Denver when Elway won his first. Maybe Cincy in the game Montana beat em at the end. Maybe the Rams in 99. Maybe the Packers. But I think this was the best! And I'm no fair weather fan.
I had a bad feeling about this game for 2 weeks. Early on I seemed to have been justified feeling uneasy. I was SO mad early in the game, because Bill Cowher played it so conservatively at the start of the game. Ben played a terrible game, but how could he have played good when he's babied like that? It's a self-fulfilling prophecy to call a game like he did in the first half.
Seattle wasn't great at the start, but they were basically dominating. Every receiver was wide open. Alexander got 5 or 6 on every run. And their defense was not being challenged at all. Yet they only got up 3-0. Darrell Jackson's push off was obvious, and yes the ref was reaching for the flag before the Steeler complained. They blew a chance to blow the game open early, and paid for it in the end.
Ben's 1st pick wasn't that awful. It was like a punt. It still killed the first momentum they had. But Ben (who's still only in year two) is a playmaker, and he made a nice shovel pass to Hines Ward. He was great on the 3rd and long pass to Ward. His runs were good. He WAS in by a sliver on the TD. Had it been overturned it wouldn't have been an outrage though.
Seattle killed themselves with awful clock management before the half. Then that ex-Nebraska kicker (HAHA!!) missed a field goal. It was 7-3, and the Steelers had been awful in every way. I was optimistic.
Optimism turned to euphoria in the 3rd. I screamed at Parker's TD run. I still think the guy's a bad back (he's like Michael Bennett). Then the loser Husker missed another kick. Then Bettis got going and I was FINALLY starting to allow hope to creep in.
CRAP! Herndon picks off a TERRIBLE pass and nearly houses it. Seattle then scores with no resistance and I was back to extreme anxiety.
It looked like that now with Ben not being allowed a shot to redeem himself, Seattle would come back and win. The holding call WAS right. The guy didn't totally fall down, but the lineman tried tackling him. He simply kept his balance. Hasselbeck threw a bad int to Taylor and there was a reprieve.
I knew the Randle El to Ward pass was coming the second the play began! YES! Perfect time to run that play. Perfect throw. 21-10!
I'm surprised Holmgren punted with 7 minutes left, following Townsend's awesome sack. Then the Steelers FINALLY did the really good ball control thing, and ran off most of the time. Seattle did awful clock management at the end too.
I cheered! Cowher got his Gatorade dunk. When he was hugging his family I nearly cried! WHOOHOOO!!!!
Of the 19 super bowls I've now seen, this was maybe the worst played on both sides. Neither team played a good game. But it was at least close, and it had some great big plays. This was sure a lot better than endless depression of last year.
It was made obvious that the Steelers had already played their better teams. Seattle is a product of a pathetic conference, a team that coasted through an easy schedule and playoffs. I don't know why anyone believed this was not so. The oddsmakers knew this. There were probably TEN AFC teams better than Seattle this year. I know I'D take San Diego and KC over them.
Anyway, bravo to the Steelers! This NFL thread and season began with me having no hope, but now that hope is back!

A little day after super bowl talk:

I didn't hate on Seattle. I was just rooting for Pittsburgh. I don't hate Holmgren. I dont hate Haselbeck. I kinda hate Alexander cause he's a selfish bastard who only cares about his contract. But Seattle was not the rightful winner. They had chances to win and blew it on their own. The Steelers blew fewer chances and made more big plays. The Steelers played their worst game and Seattle didn't capitalize.
Worst officiating ever? Nah, that title still goes to Super Bowl 36, HANDED to the undeserving Patsies. That final drive was fraudulent.
I just think it sucks that everyone kisses New England's asses, but now a different team wins and everyone's whining about refs. FUCK Tom Brady! Why was he tossing the coin last night anyway? All those old time greats in attendance and the coin tosser is a CURRENT player? OUTRAGE!!

  1. Was that the year Bus retired? If so, I called that Super Bowl at the beginning of the season.

Message Board Classics: 2004 NFL Season

Awful NFL season ends with awful Super Bowl
