A late barrage of 2020 movies
THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES 2
I know I saw the first one, but don't remember it. I doubt I'll remember this either. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Mr. and Mrs. Claus is cute. But man this is a weird movie.
HOLIDATE
I always have a soft spot for Emma Roberts. And she's really cute and charming in this romcom, which is actually not just a Christmas movie but spans many holidays.
HAPPIEST SEASON
I had hoped this one would be great, cause I always hope anything with Kristen Stewart is great. But it's just okay, too sitcommy. I also wonder if it was intentional to have Stewart show way more chemistry with Aubrey Plaza than Mackenzie Davis.
THE MIDNIGHT SKY
George Clooney needs to do more things. This Netflix movie doesn't quite make the most of its premise, but it makes a lot of it. The space segments with Felicity Jones aren't quite as good as the Clooney stuff on earth. I was still into this the whole way.
MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM
Just an acting masterpiece here. Obviously the focus is on Chadwick Boseman, and with cause. His last performance might truly be his best. He is volatile and spectacular in every scene. I really hope that, whenever they have the Oscars, he wins. But don't forget about Viola Davis, who is similarly fabulous in the title role. Films based off of plays can feel pretty staged but this is one of the best I have seen.
MANK
A David Fincher film about the making of Citizen Kane should be a slam dunk. This wasn't though. It felt really all over the place, skipping between all sorts of old Hollywood subplots. I liked the cast and the black and white.
SOUL
I wouldn't say this is quite at that peak Pixar level, but it's right at the top of the next one. It's kind of a mix of Inside Out, Coco and Wreck It Ralph. It has all that great Pixar animation, with a lot of heart. And the middle section offers up some good comedy.
THE WAR WITH GRANDPA
It's not awful, but it ain't good. Robert Deniro feels a little more engaged than he has in some of his comedy roles. I enjoyed seeing Christopher Walken and Uma Thurman. But it just isn't funny and the kid is a prick.
