Message Board Classics: 2006 NFL Season

This one is way shorter. I had too much woman drama (online and off) going on for much of that season to really keep up with the season. I'll just list the dates of posts.

8/2/06

My official picks will come before the season. The Bears are NOT going to the super bowl. They'll win the division though cause the Vikings have a lot of questions, the Lions always blow, and Brett Favre is a hasbeen and is INSANE! Yeah right this is the most talented team he's been with.

The Bears have a very good defense, but its not on par with the units that won super bowls for Baltimore, Tampa or the Patriots. It can carry them TO the playoffs, but not THROUGH the playoffs
I also highly doubt my Steelers will repeat, much as I'd love to see it happen. Last year they were driven by wanting to get Bettis a ring. But I see little competiton in their division since it looks like Palmer may not be recovered all season. Plus half the Bengal roster might be in jail by midseason. But I really believe Cleveland could be a vastly improved team. Oh if only the Vikes had canned Tice a year earlier and hired Crennel.

10/15/06

Since the season's about one-third done, here's my division-by-division breakdown:
AFC EAST
The Patriots are once again going to win this division by default. They're just ok, but the other 3 teams suck. The Jets are somehow 3-3, while the Bills and Dolphins are 2 of the league's worst teams.
AFC NORTH
This division is up for grabs again. The Ravens early dominance has cooled considerably, and now McNair is hurt. The Bengals have barely shown up their last 2 games. So even though the Steelers have struggled, they're still very much in it. Cleveland's still a work in progress.
AFC SOUTH
The Colts are unbeaten, but are not as dominant as last year. But they're likely to get home field, and I'm thinking they are looking at the regular season as a thing they need to be rid of. The Jaguars have looked great at times, but then they give up 36 to the Skins and you don't know what to think. The Titans are not a playoff factor, but they're improving each week. Houston still stinks.
AFC WEST
Even though Jake Plummer is the worst QB in NFL history (or so the talking heads seem to think), Denver is doing very well again, and their D is great. The Chargers are better than I expected, cause Rivers has played great. He's just stepped right in there. The Chiefs are a mess, and a huge disappointment. Oakland is an abomination.
NFC EAST
Philly is very close to being unbeaten, and McNabb is the MVP so far. The Giants are inconsistent, so who knows where they'll finish up. Dallas is still right there despite TO's predictable idiocy. The Redskins don't look like they've got it this year.
NFC NORTH
The Bears are a true super bowl contender. If they get home field, I see no way they falter in the playoffs. The Vikings have no offense, but their strong defense and easy schedule still give them a good shot at a playoff berth. The Packers are a joke and I have no sympathy for Favre. The Lions are a joke and I have no sympathy for Matt Millen.
NFC SOUTH
The Saints are a surprise, but not THAT big a surprise. I wouldn't bet them to lose a single home game all year. And they're 5-1 despite Reggie Bush not really doing that much. Carolina's picking up steam, but they'll shoot themselves in the foot like they always do. Atlanta's strong, but I'm not sure they can overtake the Saints. Tampa's improved with Gradkowski, but an 0-4 start killed their playoff hopes.
NFC WEST
Seattle reassumed control of the division today, although they aren't as scary as last year. The Rams were exposed as just a decent team, but they can maybe snatch a wild card. The 49ers are still doormats, and while Leinart looks like the real deal already, he's stuck playing for the always underachieving Cardinals.

10/16/06

ONLY a team coached by Dennis Green could lose a game like that! I hope Leinart demands a trade out of Arizona, cause already it's clear his skills are gonna go to waste down there.

10/23/06

Oh yes! This year's Vikings are a real team! That was easily their most impressive road win in years. No chance in hell a Mike Tice-coached team would've been able to go into Seattle and win.
They showed some real improvement on offense, and if that continues they are a definite wild card. They'll never catch the Bears, but with an easy schedule left they could nab that top wild card slot. That might even send em back to Seattle for the playoffs.
And they BETTER win next week. I'm going to the monday night game against the hated (and typically overrated Patriots). Oooh, wow, the Patriots are 5-1. Wow, they beat Buffalo twice. How did they manage that? Cincy didn't even show up against em, but the one real defense they played was Denver, and they were almost shut out. Get em Vikes!!!

Dallas is finished now. I wonder what all those Bledsoe haters are saying now after Romo stunk up Texas Stadum tonight?

10/31/06

PATRIOTS 31
VIKINGS 7
Everything I despise about the Patriots was displayed in this game, and yippee for me that I got to witness it in person.>:
WORST VIKING PERFORMANCE EVER! I've seen my fair share of awful games by this team, like the pitiful road efforts under Tice and some of those games in Green's last season. This was worse than any of them. Not one area of the team showed up tonight.
Tom Brady's not in the class of a Manning, and he'll never be Joe Montana. But he looks like those guys when he is NEVER pressured and NEVER hit. How can a defense never even get close to a QB and still have every receiver wide open? This was a scary throwback to the Viking defense of years past, where they give the receivers 10 yards of freedom every play. And the defense flat out quit on some plays.
As for Brad Johnson, he got booed right out of the game and deserved it. What a HORRIBLE display. Bledsoe lost his job for a performance nowhere near this bad. I'm not saying Brad should be benched (Bollinger is a bum, and Jackson's too raw to throw out there so soon), but there oughta be a ready hook from now on.
The only entertaining parts of the game were the ESPN mascot race at halftime, the cheerleaders Halloween outfits(one was dressed like a hooker) and the guy selling "Fuck Favre" t-shirts after the game.
The Vikings will still nab a wild card spot due to their easy remaining schedule. And I guess I better get used to the reality that the one year reprieve was all I get, and that the Pats are gonna win the super bowl again (unless Denver plays them, as they are the lone team that doesn't piss itself when they face them).

11/2/06

I agree that Brady is overrated. I've never seen a guy just fall into a perfect situation like he did. He's actually getting to that elite level the last couple years now, but people were callng him a hall of famer LONG before he was even above average.
Belichick is no hack though. He's the best coach in the NFL. Noody can take away a team's strength like he can.

Well that was what first made me hate them, back in the first super bowl run when Troy Brown was whining every week about being underdogs. That and the tuck rule debacle and the fact that their first super bowl win was tainted by the officials.
The Patriots just always have everything go their way. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Vinatieri suddenly misses a game winning FG try on sunday.
I too think Parcells is better, and Walsh's influence is seen in every single team these days.

11/8/06

Pittsburgh's a wreck. Cowher's my guy, but he screwed up big time throwing Big Ben out there so soon, both to start the season and then after that bad concussion. If Batch had been in there the whole way, they'd have 4 or 5 wins.
It'd be nice though if Jerome Bettis didn't gloat over their misfortunes week after week. You ever see him on that NBC show? He's got an ear to ear grin every time he talks about how bad the Steelers have played.
The Steelers will win at most 5 games, but next year they'll be back. Guaranteed!
As for the Vikings, that Seattle game is officially a fluke. That offense is clueless. Brad Johnson is in his final NFL season. Thank GOD they didn't give in and sign him to a contract extension. He shouldn't start ever again imo. Bollinger's no good, but at least he won't just stand there motionless every play, and may at least TRY to throw it more than 5 yards. I just hate it how they are squandering the best defense this team has had in at least a decade. An easy schedule the rest of the way makes a wild card berth possible, but they lost to the Niners, so how can you say ANY game is a sure thing?
Oh, and to Tom Brady: NICE GAME SUNDAY NIGHT!!! LOL

11/9/06

The only teams whose receivers could be considered worse are the Niners and Falcons. Wiggins is a very good TE but they never use him. I have hope for next year cause Tarvaris Jackson might be the starter, and I think he could be really good.

11/15/06

Yeah, you can pretty much stick a fork in the Vikings at this point. After the Seattle win I believed, but now it looks like they may end up 7-9 just as I predicted. IF they can win 3 more games. Hopefully they can keep this defense together next year and add some skill position players on offense. I dunno what receivers are free agents, but they need to go after whoever's on top of the list. And cut Brad Johnson for sure, and bring in a younger, decent veteran QB in case Tarvaris Jackson flounders. Maybe even take a shot at Leftwich if the Jags get rid of him.

11/22/06

NFC POWER RANKINGS
1. Bears-even if they lose at New England, I don't think many thought they'd win 2 of 3 on this road trip
2. Panthers-looks like another late season surge is coming
3. Cowboys-at least people are talking about Romo and not T.O.
4. Saints-2 straight losses, yes, but both were to desperate, underachieving AFC teams
5. Seahawks-they've just barely survived their big injuries
6. Giants-Manning better pull out of his slide
7. Falcons-this week may be a must-win
8. 49ers-Frank Gore's gonna be a beast for a long time, but no playoffs this year
9. Eagles-goodbye Donovan, goodbye all hope
10. Rams-what happened to them?
11. Packers-Aaron Rodgers' luck is worse than MINE!
12. Vikings-I'd sell my ticket to this week's game, but who would buy it???
13. Buccaneers-hard to believe this team won a division last year
14. Redskins-hard to believe this team made the playoffs last year
15. Lions-another year, another disaster
16. Cardinals-I beg you Leinart, pull an Eli and demand a trade!!!
AFC POWER RANKINGS
1. Colts-amazing how fast some jump off the bandwagon. They were gonna lose, and it was by 7 at a tough team, and there was some very suspicious officiating (Colt receivers haven't been mugged that much since the AFC title game a couple years ago)
2. Chargers-Indy prays they don't have to play them in January. Tomlinson is the MVP and there is NO debate!
3. Broncos-still a strong defense, but they may be in trouble this week
4. Ravens-trust them if you want to
5. Patriots-not a single win that impresses me (Cincy's proven to be average), and that aura of invincibility is shaky at best
6. Jaguars-hilariously inconsistent, but on their best day they can beat anyone anywhere
7. Chiefs-this week is their best shot at the playoffs
8. Steelers-it's too late, but they have their mojo back a little
9. Bengals-see #8
10. Jets-I never believed they were legit
11. Dolphins-maybe next year Saban can figure out how to coach in September and October
12. Titans-a team for next season, and a nasty spoiler this year
13. Browns-I still wish Crennel were coaching the Vikes
14. Bills-time to stop banking on Losman
15. Texans-if only they could play the Jags every week
16. Raiders-ugh

11/27/06

The Vikings are still kind of alive for the playoffs after today. Their win over the Cardinals wasn't exactly a statement, but they at least showed some life on offense with Marcus Robinson back.
In the NFC, the Bears are in. Dallas and New Orleans look solid, and if Seattle beats the Packers they'll be up 2 in the west.
That leaves 2 wild card spots. At the moment, they are held by the 6-5 Giants and Panthers, but do YOU trust either of these teams? I'm fed up with the Panthers. They've underachieved SO poorly the last few years.
The Vikings own the tiebreaker on them, so the Vikes need to gain ONE GAME on them from here on out. The schedules are favorable...but then again the Vikings just lost 3 straight to losing teams.
The other 5-6 teams are the Eagles (who look dead w/o McNabb), Falcons (another perennial underachiever), 49ers (Gore can't carry them THAT far), Rams (who hadn't won in nearly 2 months before today), and Green Bay if they beat Seattle tomorrow. That's a lot of mediocrity, but one of those teams will be a playoff team.
In the AFC, the Colts and Ravens look like the 2 dominant teams, along with the Chargers, who had a kind of expected letdown game today.
The Patriots looked lousy. Oh wow, you beat a team playing its 3rd straight road game...a team whose QB turned it over on damn near every possession...a team who conveniently had one of its starters suspended by the league for the game (not that I'd cry a pro-Patriot conspiracy or anything...*cough*)...and you still only won 17-13. And Brady's little first down pose was pathetic!
The AFC wild cards right now are KC and Denver. Shanahan's caved in and is benching Plummer (who got the team to within a game of the super bowl last year and had them at 7-4 this year despite a tough schedule) for Cutler. O...k, if you wanna believe the rookie would've gone into Arrowhead and won, be my guest. I think Cutler will be great in time, but for now the decision is horrible and stupid.
3 teams are 6-5: Bengals, Jets and Jaguars. Clearly the best of these 3 teams is Cincy. But Cincy has a tough schedule yet to come. Neither the Jets nor Jags are trustworthy.
And if you wanna dream, at 5-6 you've got the Bills and Dolphins. The Steelers were killed off today though.

12/3/06

Goodbye Brad Johnson!
At last Johnson's awful play, which has already cost the Vikings at least a couple games this year, forced Childress to bench him. Too bad it came far too late to salvage a game against the extremely beatable Bears. Grossman was also hideous. I've never seen a game with such lousy play by both QBs. The Bears aren't winning the NFC title. They just aren't. And the Vikings are still a wild card possibility, but only if they win their last 4 games. All 4 games are favorable.
This was another day of upsets and near upsets. The Colts lost to the Titans, who may be the best team that has no playoff shot. The Chargers struggled but beat Buffalo. The PATHETIC Patriots needed a 4th quarter comeback to win at home against that vaunted Lions team. Yeah, tell me again how Brady's the best QB ever to play!
Then there's the wild card hunt, with 5 7-5 teams. Denver got what they deserved for benching Plummer for Cutler (whose int that got run back was way worse than any play Jake's ever made). KC had a really bad loss at Cleveland, beaten by a 3rd string rookie QB. Cincy won on Thursday. The Jets demolished Green Bay, and the unpredictable Jaguars showed up and beat Miami.
Dallas kept the Giants on the slide, despite a mediocre game by Roger Staub...er, Tony Romo. The Saints and Seattle won again. Nothing really changed in the NFC except for Atlanta getting back into it. That Ram loss pretty much eliminates them.

12/13/06

Don't count out the Vikings quite yet. Amazingly, even though the only 2 teams they've beaten recently are Detroit and Arizona, they are in the playoff hunt. They obviously must win their last 3 games to get in. I don't see the Rams as a major challenge, but before that game they've got the Jets and Packers. I think they'll beat the Jets, whose playoff chances went bye bye last week (naturally they blow that game and it bails out the Patriots). Green Bay could be real tough though, cause it's potentially Favre's last home game (although I'd bet he returns next year).
The teams ahead of the Vikes ARE better, but they have obvious pitfalls, namely that they play each other. It is impossible that the Giants, Eagles and Falcons all win out. The Giants seem to be in good shape, but let's not forget they beat a crippled Carolina team last week led by Chris Weinke. That's far from an impressive win, and it's the only one they've had in weeks. Who knows if Vick can keep Atlanta going, and can Jeff Garcia keep this up for 3 more games?
The Bears got back on track offensively a bit. They've almost got home field now. The Saints clobbered Dallas, and with Bush getting better and better they're obviously a super bowl threat. Dallas has another T.O. distraction. Honestly, Michael Irvin's relentless apologizing for Owens is EMBARRASSING at this point. Mike, why not just go out on the field and have sex with T.O. if you love him so much?
Seattle had a stunning loss to the Cards, but like the Pats have no competition. A wild card team will beat them in the playoffs.
In the AFC, you gotta say the Chargers are the favorites. The Ravens are dangerous too, but any rematch with the Chargers won't be in Baltimore. The Colts are finished. They just are. Their defenders did not even try to tackle in that last game, and even Manning's not playing well right now. Hard to see them beating Cincy on MNF this week.
The Patriots proved for, oh, about the 13th time this season that they are frauds. How is this lousy team 9-4? Oh that's right, an easy schedule (now they get the Texans at home???). Too bad the Jets bailed them out, cause the Pats have to play at Jacksonville and Tennessee still. I'm hoping to see the Bengals get a chance at a rematch, cause we've seen that early season blowout was one of the fluke games of the year.
Cincy's red hot, and if they can beat the Colts this week a lot of people will start to compare them to last year's Steelers. Yeah the Jags dominated the Colts, but they are still so inconsistent. I wouldn't print playoff tickets just yet. Denver is finished and they deserve to be. I'm hoping the Vikes get Plummer for next season. KC looks pretty much dead too. And the Jets are shaky, although their schedule's not too bad. Hey, maybe things will fall just right for the red hot Titans to sneak in there. I think it's clear they'd be in the playoffs had Vince started right away. The Steelers would still have a shot if Cowher hadn't started Ben right after that concussion. Miami would have a shot if Saban hadn't hitched the train to Culpepper.

12/18/06

JETS 26, VIKINGS 13
The Vikings are basically finished now, as once more Brad Childress illogically stuck with the pathetic Brad Johsnon until it was too late. I spent basically the whole 2nd and 3rd quarters practically screaming at the TV to have Johnson benched. All Johnson did in 3 quarters today, save for one TD pass to a wide open receiver, was stand there and let himself get sacked. He did not even TRY! Had Tarvaris Jackson come into the game to start the 2nd half, I have no doubt in my mind that he would have led the Vikings to a comeback win. Jackson showed that the future may be bright for this team, but the present is a playoff-free season. You can pin that on Johnson, whose embarassing play cost this team at least 3 or 4 games, and was a major factor in EVERY one of their 8 losses. I'm so tired of the apologists for him too. Hello! The offensive line looks so bad cause they're guarding a QB who is a statue!! That line looked pretty strong with Jackson in there.
So the Vikes are not technically eliminated yet, but from the looks of it they must win out now, and have the Giants and Falcons probably lose twice each. This is all irrelevant though, cause it's unlikely they can win at Lambeau on Thursday night.
The Bears are heading for a fall. Just as Grossman is getting his head together, the defense is imploding. Tampa is the WORST offense in the league, yet they put up 28 points in just over a quarter to force OT.
Can the Saints beat them? Well, they inexplicably lost at home to the putrid Redskins in this week's #1 example why betting on the NFL is idiotic. Brees blew his shot at the MVP too, but they clinched the division.
Can Dallas beat them? Well, if Owens doesn't spit on everybody! You just know they can't wait to cut him after the season.
Can Seattle beat them? No. They're the NFC's Patriots, a crappy team who'll win their division due to lack of competition.
The Eagles are the hot team right now. I thought the McNabb injury was it for them, but Garcia is playing great and Westbrook was awesome today against the Giants, who are fading big time. They've won one of six games, and it was against the quitting Panthers.
Atlanta's still alive, but they need help. The Niners are still alive for the divison.
In the AFC, the Tomlinson MVP tour continued. The Chargers are 12-2, still a game up on the Ravens. Gotta watch McNair's health though, cause Boller won't take them anywhere. The Patriots defied that tough schedule again and beat Houston. The Colts clinched their divison before even taking the field Monday night.
If the Bengals win that they'll be in really good shape. The Jaguars blew a game at Tennessee, proving why them getting in the playoffs would be a waste of time. They WON'T win a road game! Would you believe I'm actually rooting for the Patriots to beat them next week?
The Jets have a good chance now. Denver stayed alive, but Plummer would've beaten the Cardinals too. The Chiefs are pretty much dead. The Steelers and Titans are both playing great, but bad starts killed them. Both will make the playoffs next year. Buffalo's been playing good too. 4 wins out of 5, the only loss a close one to the Chargers.

12/22/06

PACKERS 9
VIKINGS 7
That was the worst football game I have ever seen. Thank god The O.C. kept me from having to witness the whole thing. Tarvaris Jackson stunk. Favre stunk. Ahman Green stunk. Troy Williamson should forfeit his entire season's pay. Brad Childress is immediately going on the hot seat to start next season, because he has shown NO ability to coach an offense. He puts Jackson in there and makes him play like Brad Johnson. So apparently it's his rule that his QB must be immobile. If this team does not make a major improvement on offense to start next season, Childress has to go.

12/26/06

Well, just one week to go in the season, and it's looking like it could be the best final week in years, with 3 playoff spots left to be decided and 11 teams vying for those 3 slots.
In the AFC, the Chargers and Ravens are gonna be 1-2. The fast-fading Colts will likely be #3, and the fraudulent Patriots (beneficiaries once more of a lousy referee call on that Garrard 'fumble"--funny how when Brady did that it was a forward pass) are #4.
Denver is pretty much in now, since that IDIOT long snapper from the Bengals blew that game yesterday. And the Jets snuck by the Dolphins tonight, and have Oakland at home next week which is pretty close to a lock. BUT...a few years back there was no way the Vikings could lose to Arizona...and they DID.
So if the Jets lose or if Denver loses at home to the Niners, then we've got the 8-7 teams. The Bengals host the Steelers, who you know will at least try (though they didn't against Baltimore). The Jaguars play at the Chiefs. And the Titans host the paper Pats, but New England always ruins everything, so forget the dream of Vince Young getting into the playoffs.
In the NFC, the Bears are #1, the Saints are #2 (and MY pick to make the super bowl), the rolling Eagles a win away from a divison title and a 10-6 record (I predicted both to start the season!), and Seattle being bailed out by their bad division.
Dallas would be the #5 seed right now, but I think we've learned that maybe Bledsoe isn't so inferior to Romo after all.
Look out for...the PACKERS? Yep, the 7-8 Packers have a really good shot at the 6 seed. The Giants want Coughlin gone, and winning at Washington is far from a sure thing. The Packers are at the Bears, but the Bears have nothing at all to play for. The Panthers play the Saints, who also have nothing to play for. The Falcons go to Philly, and have quit on their season, so forget about them. The Rams play at the Vikings, who can always win when they can't really benefit from it.
But here's what's really important: my fantasy team Purple Pride won the championship this weekend. Thank you Shaun Alexander and Frank Gore!

1/2/07

No coach is gonna be on the hot seat to start next season more than Brad Childress. The promising Viking season turned into a disaster, culminating in the pitiful effort shown against the Rams. The players quit on the coach they hate, who spitefully cut Marcus Robinson, who accepts no input from anyone, whose play-calling is a joke. It won't happen, but they should just fire his ass now. The Gophers canned Glen Mason rather than waste another season with him. Face it, with the way Mike Tomlin made this defense so good, he's gonna be a hot commodity, so why not just make the switch right now?
The Vikings could turn this thing around next year, but not with Childress.
Now onto the rest of the league.
In the AFC, the Chiefs improbably made it in, after beating the Jaguars. Then the Bengals (ok, just Shayne Graham) lost to the Steelers in hopefully NOT Cowher's last game. Then the Patriots as usual ruined everything by beating the Titans, and running up the score (not that anyone ever criticizes them).
Then the Broncos choked at home against the 49ers and fell out of the playoffs. How is this possible? I thought Jake Plummer was the cause of all of Denver's problems? Funny, they were 7-4 with him, and 2-3 with Cutler, the 2 wins against Arizona and the Bengals, and only cause of a muffed XP snap.
The Chargers held the 1 seed and the Ravens the 2. Indy got the 3...barely. They're in SO much trouble.
In the NFC...oy, what a crop of playoff teams. The Giants got the last spot, though the Rams are clearly a better team. The Eagles won the east cause Dallas choked big time against the Lions! How is this possible? I thought Drew Bledsoe was the cause of all their problems? All those people who were chiseling Tony Romo's bust for the hall of fame look pretty stupid now.
Rex Grossman played like shit again so the Bears may be in trouble. The Saints lost, but played very little with the starters. Seattle's coming on just a little bit.
The Packers went 8-8, and Brett Favre has become an embarrassing attention whore. He's done this thing 3 or 4 years in a row. If he has any class he'll retire this time, after a respectable season.
PLAYOFFS
In the AFC, the Patriots will win cause I need to be tormented. And no rookie coach is gonna beat Belichick and Joe Monta...er, Tom Brady at home in the playoffs.
The Colts are in for a battle, with Larry Johnson coming in to play that terrible defense. Manning's gonna have to be perfect.
In the NFC, I see Seattle beating Dallas pretty easily, and the Eagles beating the Giants.

1/5/07

Well, sadly, my favorite coach Bill Cowher is resigning from the Steelers. I can understand him doing it, but I hoped it wouldn't happen since the Steelers are primed to be back in the playoffs and beyond next year. My dream now is that he comes back after one year and ends up as coach of the Vikings after Brad Childress flops in year 2. But that's about as likely as Tony Dungy coming here to coach the Gophers.
Nick Saban ran away from the Dolphins like a little bitch. The Raiders fired Art Shell. The Cardinals fired Denny Green. The Falcons canned Jim Mora. Maybe the next coach will actually let Vick be Vick.

1/6/07

COLTS 23, CHIEFS 8
Well this was NOT the game I expected. I thought Indy would win a close shootout, but instead the Indy D rose to the occasion and destroyed the Chiefs. And bailed out Manning, who has quietly been pretty average all season long. One wonders why the Colts have played so lethargic on D before this, and if they can duplicate this effort at Baltimore.
SEAHAWKS 21, COWBOYS 20
After seeing the Broncos (who threw the superior Jake Plummer under the bus for Cutler) plummet out of the playoffs, it seems fitting to have the Cowboys (who threw the superior Drew Bledsoe under the bus for Tony Romo) choke their way out of the playoffs, and to have Romo be the cause of it.
This actually turned into a pretty good game, with a couple of the best teamwork plays you're gonna see: Roy Williams getting the ball tipped to him for a pick, and whoever it was for Seattle throwing the ball backwards on the safety.
And Dallas looked to have brilliantly salted it away with that pass to the 1. But then Romo-Mania came crashing down once and for all. Give him credit for nearly running it in, but this guy was lavished with praise without ever really deserving it. Like Cutler he may prove to be good, but both were products of this kneejerk idiocy among so-called NFL experts, who say that any QB who plays a couple bad games needs to be benched forever. Well, both Denver and Dallas failed this season because their coaches who should know better caved in to the pressure brought on by people who just don't get it. I truly do hope Romo gets past this. I have nothing personal against the guy, even if he doinked the ridiculously cute Carrie Underwood.
GO JETS!!!

1/7/07

PATRIOTS 37, JETS 16
This was almost a rerun of all these other Patriot home playoff games. The only differences were that this time there was no miracle snowstorm that floated in at the opening kickoff, and also the opponent actually competed for most of the game. I'll give the Jets some credit for being plucky and staying in the game til the 4th quarter, but they showed that they were clearly a team that was lucky as hell to be in the playoffs. They won 10 games against all the weaker teams, while teams like Cincy and Denver had much tougher schedules. But they hung around at least until they forgot what a lateral was, and until they simply stopped covering the reject WRs on the Pats team. When Jabar Gaffney and Reche Caldwell are open on every down, your secondary stinks. I'm amazed Joe Monta...er, Tom Brady can complete those wide open throws with no pressure. How's about a little Shawn Merriman in ya grill next week!
EAGLES 23, GIANTS 20
As I predicted, this game was pretty close. But watching it, I'm not sure how it was. The Eagles were clearly the better team nearly the whole game. Garcia wasn't great, but Westbrook was. Shockey lost his helmet during a play. I was hoping for a decapitation so that idiot would be gone. And Philly actually was able to hold onto the snap so they won.

And then I had to get the hell away from the board after this for some time (long story).

BUT....I did post on Live Journal after this, so in the interest of closure here is my entry from the super bowl:

PEYTON WINS THE BIG ONE!

And naturally, ESPN follows with "does he need to win another super bowl?"

Whatever. I'm SO happy for Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning and the Colts for winning the super bowl. There's few guys in sports easier to root for then those two. Both came so close for so many years, and both kept getting ripped by the ranting idiots on ESPN. Now they have a super bowl championship, and both can be named among the all time greats at what they do.

This was not a stylish super bowl win, but like the Steelers last year the Colts did enough to win even though they weren't playing their best.
I disagreed with Manning winning MVP. I'd have given it to Dominic Rhodes for his dominant running, including a couple really big short runs he made. And aside from the fumble, Addai was great too, always bailing Manning out when he was under pressure.

The Colts were easily the better team, but the Bears had their shot. I predicted Hester would run something back...I just didn't know it would be the opening kickoff. I feel bad for Rex Grossman, but he really was the major reason the Bears lost. 2 fumbled snaps from center. Ugly interceptions.

I could really get used to seeing teams and people I really like winning super bowls. This wasn't quite as satisfying as last year was, but it's 2nd. I guess the question is whose 1st super bowl win would be next on the list?
Marty Schottenheimer springs to mind, as does the McNabb/Andy Reid pair. I've given up on Carolina. The Saints are too new. The Vikings are gonna be 3-13 next year probably.

It could be a very long time before there's anything as long-awaited and satisfying as these last 2 seasons. Savor it.

GO COLTS!

  1. Fun useless fact. I almost went to the MNF game for my birthday however the tickets were a little out of my dad’s price range. I was just excited there was a game on my birthday. Yea, I’m a dork.
