Got Fooled Again
Purdue 20
Gophers 10
Silly me. As cynical as I am about Gopher football, even I was starting to buy in. Not just that they could win a very weak Big Ten west, but that they might win it on merit.
Those opening 3 blowouts over crap teams was one thing, but I really thought crushing Michigan State IN East Lansing meant something. Meant that this Gopher team was different.
Nope. Not different. That was proven Saturday as the Gophers welcomed an unranked Purdue in for Homecoming, and proceeded to play like complete shit and lose 20-10.
For some reason Mo Ibrahim did not play. Supposedly his ankle was too hurt, yet there he was standing on the sidelines in full uniform with his helmet on.
With him out the Gophers offense was shit. They ran for only 47 yards on 25 carries. But hey, we have a 6th year QB who is supposedly an NFL prospect. Surely just this once you can put the game in Tanner Morgan's hands and he can go win a game for you. Nope. Morgan did have a TD pass dropped into an interception, but he was lousy outside of that.
The game was winnable. Purdue's offense was dead quiet after going up 10-0. The Gophers crawled back into a tie midway through the 3rd quarter. But they could never take the game, cause Morgan couldn't get it done.
Purdue nabbed the lead back 13-10 with 4 and change left. So here was one more golden chance for Morgan to lead a big drive and go win the game. Instead they go 3 and out and punt. Then the exhausted defense gave up a long run to set up the clinching Purdue TD. Ballgame.
It's so tiresome. Year after year Gopher teams tease the possibility of doing something special, only to either blow the game that really matters or blow an easy game BEFORE the games that really matter even get here.
This loss doesn't eliminate the chance they could win the west, but anyone would have to be a fool to buy back in until they actually prove they can do it. And I was already a fool to buy in once. Fool me once, shame on....shame on you. If you fool me you can't get fooled again.
