NFL Week 1 Recap

Thursday:

LIONS 21, CHIEFS 20

Most annoying NFL opener since 2004. Even without Kelce and Jones, the Chiefs probably beat Detroit comfortably if they don't have constant unforced errors, with a litany of dropped passes and a couple of inexplicably bad play calls. But now we gotta hear more slurping of the Lions. Please don't let this be an omen for the 2023 season. 

Sunday:

49ERS 30, STEELERS 7

Rough start for my AFC North pick, the worst home loss under Tomlin. And the 49ers looked completely dominant. Purdy played very well too. 

SAINTS 16, TITANS 15

Not all close games are good. A late Derek Carr TD pass was the difference. 

BROWNS 24, BENGALS 3

Imagine making Joe Burrow the highest paid player in NFL history, and days later he can't even break 100 yards. 

RAVENS 25, TEXANS 9

Workmanlike win for the Ravens, who lost J.K. Dobbins for the year. CJ Stroud was adequate in his debut. 

JAGUARS 31, COLTS 21

Colts led much of this game, but the Jags pulled away. 

FALCONS 24, PANTHERS 10

Falcons run game led the way. Rough start for Bryce Young,  and a quiet game for Adam Thielen. 

COMMANDERS 20, CARDINALS 16

Taking Cards damn near pulled off the road win, but the Commies snuck out a late comeback. 

PACKERS 38, BEARS 20

Two stories here are that Jordan Love looked good, and Justin Fields continued to look terrible. 

EAGLES 25, PATRIOTS 20

Eagles had a big lead for much of the game, but the Pats made a late rally that almost worked.  

DOLPHINS 36, CHARGERS 34

Probably the game of the week, a shootout won by Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill. 

RAMS 30, SEAHAWKS 13

I have the Rams as a surprise wild card this year, and they started quite well, crushing Seattle and getting major production from a bunch of receivers you never heard of. 

RAIDERS 17, BRONCOS 16

First half: Hey, looks like Sean Payton fixed Russell Wilson.
Second half: Nope. 

COWBOYS 40, GIANTS 0

A comical demolition in the rain. Turnovers, a blocked field goal touchdown, the Giants kind of did it all. I hate Ed Donatell even more after seeing this. 

Monday: 

JETS 22, BILLS 16 OT

Preseason kickoff post (and other posts): Oh yes, it IS that time again. Training camps are open. The first preseason games are less than a week away. Players are already being idiots. It's the best time of the sports year. It is not yet the time for predictions, but I'll hit on some of the big recent stories. Ricky Williams retires. Awful NFL season ends with awful Super Bowl

BUCCANEERS 31 CHIEFS 9 The 2020 NFL season is over. Thank god! A season that was almost across the board unenjoyable, and felt empty and largely felt manipulated, ended with the worst outcome imaginable. With a result that not only continues this 20 year nightmare but that will frankly hurt the NFL for years to come. I was not looking forward to this game. I knew this was going to happen. Maybe not in blowout fashion but I knew the NFL was going to see to it that Tom Brady got his 7th title. The house wins. The game was never fun. Right from the start the Chiefs seemed sleepy, like they weren't really in it. This team plays with swagger, but in this game they had none. Patrick Mahomes was under enormous pressure from the start. The Chiefs grabbed the 1st lead at 3-0 but then from basically the end of the 1st quarter until halftime it was a nightmare.
