13 Reasons Why season 2 review
The first season of this show was a masterpiece. I'd probably put it among my top 10 favorite single seasons of any show ever. I also didn't really see where a season 2 would even go.
It goes all over the place as it turns out. Rather than largely staying focused on the characters of Hannah and Clay, this season really expands the scope of things, and occasionally stumbles by spending too much time with poor characters or tedious story beats.
So we got Clay talking to force ghost Hannah, and dating that cool Skye from last season, until she is written out of the show pretty quickly. And dealing with the trial involving the school's culpability in Hannah's death. And dodging threats from Jocky McRaperBoy(aka Bryce) and his sexual assault squad.
Jocky McRaperBoy was the worst part of season 1 too, and here his one note role gets a major uptick in screen time. It's really absurd how over the top some of this gets, between how almost cartoonishly evil he and his buddies are, as well as how hard the school insists on looking the other way all the time. I mean, I guess the baseball team is really good, so rape is okay???
Most of the other storylines are good though. Zack and Jessica in particular are both much better characters this time around.
There really is no reason to have Hannah in this season so much, but it's not like I'm going to turn down more scenes of Katherine Langford.
The finale looks like it's building to one thing, but then it sort of cops out. Really the last 20 minutes of the season are a mess, as they set up a season 3 that tbh will probably not be that good if they go with what the cliffhanger implies.
