Movie review: Tully
The 3rd collab between Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody, after the very good Young Adult and before that the nearly perfect Juno.
I'd rank this 3rd among the 3. But for much of the way it's very, very good. The depiction of everything happening to Charlize Theron as she gives birth to her 3rd kid and deals with all the stress involved felt very authentic. It's kind of funny how even after packing on like 50 pounds for the role, and mostly being shown with bags under the eyes, and frumpy clothes, Theron still looks stunning.
I dock the movie some for a late in the game twist involving the title character played by Mackenzie Davis, the "night nanny" who comes to help Theron out. It's a clever bit of writing, sure, but it just felt like the wrong movie to do it in. It undercuts the authenticity that had been the movie's strongest suit.
