Message Board Classics: Odds and Ends
3/17/06 (V For Vendetta review)
This thing might've made 50 million total today. It's possible.
I eagerly await the DVD to see what was cut. I just wish the ending hadn't been so rushed. You have a lot of major things all in maybe 15 minutes: the birth of Luke & Leia, Padme's death and funeral, Vader being put in the suit, the Death Star shot, the droid memory wipe (although I'm glad a real reason is there for it), the Qui-Gon thing, the twins being split up, and Yoda and Obi-Wan going into hiding.
3. Return Of The Jedi: I'd rank this ahead of ESB if not for the rather boring opening act with Jabba (not to mention the SE's musical number). The last third of the film is PERFECT! Luke burning Vader's body is my favorite shot in the whole saga. "I have to save you." "You already have Luke." Death Star awesomeness! Oh, and I LIKED the Ewoks. AND I like Jar Jar! HA!
4. The Phantom Menace: Gets a ridiculously unfair bum rap. Last time I watched it, having now seen the Ep3 trailers and alas some spoliers (damn you TV Guide), I like the way this film was done even more. Jake Lloyd sucks, but Liam Neeson is great. Darth Maul is great. The lighsaber fight rules! Natalie kicks ass in it.
5. A New Hope: Very very good, of course, but the least exciting SW film by far imo. Vader vs Kenobi is great. Death Star attack is great. Tarkin owns you!
I just saw the film, and I had low expectations but was left pretty satisfied.
It is NOT some 4 star masterpiece that some are making it out to be, but as for films of 2006 so far it is clearly right at the top.
Natalie's performance was OUTSTANDING! This may be the most distinctive role she's ever had, and her acting fit it. She didn't overplay anything and hit all the right notes. And I thought her accent was fine. And it was nice seeing her with hair again.
The George Bush parallels in the story are HILARIOUS and spot-on! That was my favorite part of the film, especially that speech by V talking about the John Hurt character near the end of the film. And the news network on the government's payroll (hmm, who might THAT be???), and the bloated talking head who's a fucking nutcase (the involvement with drugs indicates who THAT is supposed to be!!). I hope this film pisses off every conservative out there. There's the line in the film about artists exposing the truth. Well, this film IS about Bush.
The film's not perfect though. V is kind of an annoying character. Most of the time he's spouting gobbledy gook that could only be the dialogue of the same men who made The Matrix Reloaded. And the silly comic bits with him were, well, silly. Plus I thought the ending with everyone in the masks lacked the impact it was supposed to have. And there are numerous self-indulgent touches in there.

SHOW RECAP (just the Natalie parts)
MONOLOGUE
Very funny with her knowing more about Star Wars than the geeks did. Parnell inquiring about her Professional wardrobe! LOL
JAMBA JUICE
Incredibly cute, and I loved how she threw the change at people. I wish she'd cracked up.
LARRY KING LIVE
I liked Nat's deep voice and eyebrows. Skit was just ok.
THE NEEDLERS
Played a fertilty doctor. I bet her dad loved that! Another skit that was just ok.
WEEKEND UPDATE
What a funny little cameo as Sasha Cohen! LOVE seeing the comedic side! As someone else said, she HAS to do a comedy!
WAKE UP WAKEFIELD
One of the few recurring skits I like. Nat had LONG hair here! Her last name was Hershlag! Her dance was cute!
DIGITAL SHORT
The greatest thing ever! Someone get the entire lyrics! They're hard to make out. Loved her breaking the bottle over her head. Nat, trust me, if you wanna fuck all night, look no further than moi! we can listen to 50 Cent together and shag!!!
OVERALL
Natalie was a 10 as a host! The show overall was a 6. SNL's down from where they were 3 or 4 years ago.
I think Natalie absolutely should host again

My team is sort of the Twins, but I mock them all the time for being so awful. I'm a Braves fan, but they always lose in the playoffs.
The Red Sox are terrible this year. They have no pitching, and lately haven't even hit as well, so I think they'll lose out to the Yankees. The Yankees are weak though, so I truly don't think they'll win the World Series. I'll stick with my preseason pick Anaheim.
In the NL, my pick had been the Marlins, but they're all but eliminated. The Braves never do it in October. The west winner is a joke. It'll either be St. Louis or the wild card. Either Houston or Philly could reach the World Series.

Well, it looks like the Astros are in pretty good shape, since Philly dropped a couple games to the Mets.
The Red Sox continue to blow it. I saw David Ortiz bunt tonight, down 7-2. What the heck are they thinking in Beantown?? The Yankees are cleaning up against the lowly Orioles, and it looks like they'll head into the final series at Fenway with a division lead.
Boston could still get the wild card though, cause Cleveland's cooled off quite a bit, losing to Tampa Bay.

Well, ther matchups are set. Here's my division series picks:
ANGELS over YANKEES: This NY team sucks, and the Angels were my pick at the start of the year. Plus, only 1 start for Randy Johnson.
RED SOX over WHITE SOX: Not real confident on this, but the White Sox have been average the last 2 months.
CARDINALS over PADRES: please! It's not even fair.
ASTROS over BRAVES: The Braves always choke in the playoffs unfortunately. I hope the Braves win the World Series though.

Yesterday was an AWFUL day to be both a Braves fan and a Yankee hater.
First the Braves find a new way to choke in the playoffs, and then the Angels completely choke their feminine asses off.
If God is good, the Yankees lose.

If God is good, the Yankees lose.

Nothing is sweeter than seeing the Yankees LOSE! Well, the Patriots losing maybe.
My AL pick is the Angels, but really only cause they were my pick at the start of the year. I'm not confident in that pick at all.
My NL pick is the Cards. Last year's Astro team was better and hotter.
I LOVE the Curse Of A-Rod!!!!!!

The White Sox are going to win the World Series. They are unstoppable right now, the way they annihilated the Angels.
The Astros are up 3-1 on the Cardinals. Once again Larussa is failing in the postseason.

WOW!!!
If the Cards go on to win this series, that goes down as one of the all time moments in baseball history!

Yeah, the Cardinals took all that momentum from game 5...and did nothing.
I have Chicago in 6. They way they demolished the Red Sox and Angels was more than enough to convince me. The Astros beat Atlanta and Larussa, both known for coming up short in the postseason anyway.

White Sox won the longest game in World Series history, and are up 3-0. Yay! Buh-bye Houston.
6/12/05 (MTV movie awards)
I was just able to see this today since our cable was out on Thursday.
Now then...
This was without a doubt the WORST MTV Movie Awards show ever, and I have seen every one of them. Of all the award shows out there, this may be the one where I care about the winners the least. I watch for the guest list and the little short film spoofs and maybe the performances.
Jimmy Fallon is a pretty funny guy, but he sucks ass as an award show host. He did not do a single funny thing. His monologue was excruciating.
The Star Wars short was just ok. I know I could've written a funnier one in 5 minutes though.
The Batman short was awful and I officially want the talentless Andy Dick BANNED for life from, well, everything. Get him out of here!
The Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn thing sucked too.
UGH!
The performances:
Eminem was awful. This guy just is not a live performer at ALL. I have never seen him give an even remotely engaging live performance. And his Triumph bit with Lindsay Lohan was just sad. It's been a known fact for years now that Shady has NO sense of humor unless it's on a record.
Foo Fighters: ehh
Yellowcard: ehh
Mariah Carey: I'm VERY glad she's back on her A game. That performance I liked.
Onto the randomness:
-Nicole Richie hosted the pre-show. She is beyond cute!
-From the looks of it, 50 Cent's movie is going to be really bad.
-Jennifer Connelly's lack of personality makes her the perfect match for Federline. Let's hook them up.
-Nicole Kidman is an evil witch. Oh, was she on the show too?
-Rock and Sandler were not funny.
-Jessica Alba IS my future wifey.
-Dustin Hoffman grabbed his crotch. That's something I never expected to see.
-I feel really bad for Jon Heder. You just know he's gonna end up like Jaleel White or Dustin Diamond, forever stuck in one role.
-Rachel McAdams IS my future wifey!
-Wow, its been 20 years since The Breakast Club? I guess it would have dawned on me if I gave a rip! That movie's ok, but it is NOT timeless.
-Jessica Biel IS my future wifey!
-Ziyi Zhang still can't speak english very well. But I can't speak chinese at all.
-Katie and Tom. Look, Katie is still clearly the real deal, and Tom still seems like a good guy. I'm baffled why this romance is getting ripped so much. Give Tom a break. He was stuck married to that evil witch for like 10 years. Still, I will have to step in at some point, since Katie IS my future wifey and has been for about 7 years!
-Jessica Simpson don't look so temptin.
-Lindsay Lohan can joke about it all she wants. She's scary thin. And the blonde thing doesn't work for her.
-Hilary Duff is not quite old enough, so she MIGHT be my future wifey!
-Napoleon Dynamite wins best movie. Hmmm, wasn't it released by MTV Films? Interesting.
And Natalie lost. Boo!

5/19/05 (Revenge of the Sith review)
I just returned from a midnight showing for ROTS. I think this film is gonna crush all opening day/weekend records. The theater originally had 3 midnight shows and through demand added up to 7
I thought ROTS was fantastic, although for the only time in these prequels, I left the theater with quite a handful of nagging problems. I'll get to that.
Everyone wants to know about the lava backdropped duel between Anakin (Vader by that point) and Obi-Wan. It lives up to the billing in every way. One thing ROTS does better than Eps 1&2 is that the lightsaber battles actually last a little while. And right before they fight, Vader force chokes Padme and nearly kills her, one of several truly unsettling moments in the film.
At the same time you've got Yoda versus Sidious. Again, very unsettling to see Yoda get his ass kicked. "Failed, I have." This scene was great too, and everyone in the theater laughed at Yoda's entrance where he knocked out the guards
The opening space battle really grabbed me. The thing overall that struck me early on was just how FUNNY this movie was. R2-D2 just owned the first 20 minutes of this movie! When he was trying to muffle Obi-Wan's call I was smiling ear to ear on that. And then the way he beat those battle droids was great. I just loved that little astro droid!
Sam Jackson wanted a cool ending for Mace Windu and he got it. Palpatine could've been beaten. I was sitting there rooting for Mace to succeed. I knew he'd die, but seeing it was the most shocking part of the film anyway.
I thought Grievous was a really cool character. I'd been led to expect him not to be, but I liked him more than Dooku. Dooku's one scene here is kind of just ok.
Just now I get to Natalie. Honestly, when she first showed up, I was like "oh yeah, Natalie's in this movie"
Nat's screen time seemed to be the least of the three films, but she does give the film heart. I actually really loved the first couple scenes with her and Hayden. In AOTC I bought the romance that a lot of people didn't. But in these scenes I FELT it. However, I must disagree that Natalie looks as gorgeous as in the last film. Uh...NO
Padme's death scene was sad, but not heartbreaking, which I'll explain.
Acting-wise the film is a mix. I liked Natalie, LOVED Ewan. Sam was ok. Ian McDiarmid was good, but some scenes he went too over the top.
The big beef I have with the film is that Lucas did not just bite the bullet and make it really long. The film is VERY rushed in places, especially with Anakin's switch to the darkside. It takes ONE SCENE! He helps Palpatine kill Windu and suddenly he's a Sith apprentice. It just did not convince me, although eventually Hayden worked in later scenes.
And the last 15 minutes or so after the two big battles is really rushed. I know personally from writing that a lot of times when I'm near the end, I tend to rush through things, hitting the major plot points but forgetting the meat. That's what the end of the film felt like. Padme's death shoulda been some sort of centerpiece moment, but here it's kinda just one more scene in a hurried lot. We also get the twins being separated (Beru is CUTE!), Vader being put in the suit, and Yoda telling Obi-Wan a secret about Qui-Gon Jinn that I wish there'd been more to.
The dialogue is better in spots than the other films, but there were a couple points where I cringed it was so bad. Nothing as bad as the "I hate sand" part from AOTC, but a couple of the Hayden-Natalie scenes were horribly written.
Visually the film is perfect. The Oscars seem hell bent on not giving the fx awards to the prequels, but once more they'd be fools to deny the film. The only fx bit that didn't work great was Obi-Wan riding that huge lizard.
Loved the Wookiee fight scene, although Chewy in particular doesn't do anything real cool, Everyone laughed when Yoda hopped on his back
The Jedi slaughter ("order 66") was as dark as expected. I knew the younglings would be killed too, and some people gasped at that scene.
I thought the very last shot of the film was great.
I'm a giant fan of AOTC, and for me this film does not top it. Too many big things don't work as well as hoped. But I'd put it ahead of Phantom Menace. If it sounds like I didn't like the film at all then my mistake. I can't wait to see it again and catch stuff I've missed.

The dreams coulda been put there by Palpatine. Some of this stuff was unclear in the film (I'd love to know what material was deleted--I guess I'll know once I read the novel).
Two scenes that I forgot to mention that were a couple of my favorites in the film:
1. The scene where Obi-Wan is leaving to go find Grievous and Anakin is staying behind to keep an eye on Palpatine. Anakin and Obi-Wan have a really nice scene and are so clearly friends. Obi-Wan even tells Anakin almost exactly what Qui-Gon told HIM in Phantom Menace, about how he's a better Jedi and wiser. That scene was really sad cause it's the last time they're together before Anakin turns.
2. The scene where Anakin discovers Palpatine is a Sith Lord. OMG! That is the entire original trilogy in one scene. It never woulda happened if Anakin just killed a defenseless Palpatine right there.
Interesting btw how when Mace is gonna kill Palpatine he uses the same reasoning that Palpatine uses to convince Anakin to kill Dooku, that he's "too dangerous to live"

I heard on CNN that the film made an astonishing 17 MILLION DOLLARS just from the midnight screenings

I eagerly await the DVD to see what was cut. I just wish the ending hadn't been so rushed. 5/20/05
That last shot is the best. I remember when I first listened to the soundtrack and heard that I was like OMG that is the perfect music to end the film with.
I really wish the thing about Qui-Gon hadn't just been thrown in there, cause he's never mentioned in the original trilogy and so there will never be any payoff from that.
I loved the way Yoda SAID Chewbacca. It was like "Chewbucca"

I saw the movie again this afternoon, and the gap between it and AOTC did close a little for me.
I teared up a couple times on this viewing. First when Padme is watching from afar as smoke pours out of the Jedi temple and she cries. And also right after she gets to Mustafar and is sitting in the ship, and there's that moment where she's wondering what's happening.
My complaints about things being far too rushed remain. There are really only 3 lines of dialogue that are really bad:
"don't shut me out"
"he's been under a lot of stress"
"she's lost the will to live"
The first two especially are really modern phrases, kinda like in TPM where the race announcer goes "that's gotta hurt"
And that 3rd line makes me think of a South Park episode.

4/27/05 (pre-Sith ranking if Star Wars films)
1. Attack Of The Clones: Honestly, I will be surprised if Episode 3 can top this. The only flaw is the corny love dialogue, but hello! Natalie is in all those scenes and looking goddess-like! Best story of all the films. Loved the mystery aspect of it, with Obi-Wan playing detective. Yoda vs Dooku remains one of the all time OMFG moments! Mace Windu's entrance! Oh, and Natalie in the field = uber-gorgeous!! Love theme.
2. The Empire Strikes Back: I think quite easily the best of the OT. Downbeat endings are always good. Vader vs Luke is the whole saga's most dramatic fight (although I suspect Anakin vs Kenobi in Ep3 shall top it). Luke's horribly acted scream that I mockingly do all the time Boba Fett! Lando is smooth with the ladies!3.
5/15/03 (Dawson's Creek finale review)

There was a lot of that going on. This was up there with Wonder Years for the best and most emotional series finale I've ever seen. Nearly a perfect send-off.
Ok, first off, Jen died. She had a baby girl in the preceding 5 years (this ep of course went 5 years into the future), which caused some sort of heart problem. Before the end of hour 1 she was in the hospital, and she died with a half an hour left in the show, so thankfully they didn't leave the "surprise" til the end. Two scenes made me flat out blubber. In one, Jen tapes a message to her little girl. And then her actual death was so nicely handled. No big theatrics, no music swelling up, no dialogue at all. Just her looking at a sleeping Grams, then closing her eyes. Then Grams wakes up and realizes she's died, and kisses her forehead and says "I'll see you soon." Sweet jesus, I needed a damn bucket under my chin, and I barely liked Jen the last couple seasons. Imagine if they'd had Joey Potter die. But they did that well. I feared the death was gonna seem completely tacky no matter who it was, but it wasn't.
And they had Joey make her final decison between Dawson and Pacey. And she chose Pacey. This is good cuz I'm very Pacey-like, and they always were a better couple than her and Dawson. It ended happy. Much bittersweetness.
Dawson had become a TV writer and producer of a WB show called The Creek. Kevin Williamson came back to write the finale, and you could tell right away. I thought the opening scene was gonna drown in self-awareness. But it was just that part. They had a nice touch where they had The Creek versions of recognizable Dawson's Creek promotional material. I think I saw an alternate version of the Katie Rolling Stone cover.
Funniest part: Deputy Doug turned out to be gay after all, and he was now dating Jack.

1/2/03 (after the highly controversial Britney & Natalie New Year's Eve party)
Some of you Britney bashers are so funny.
Glad to see the 2 lovelies hanging out again. I think it is reasonable to say they're good friends. I'd say even by celeb standards they seem to hang out a decent amount.
Both of them look pretty wasted. And since this was each of their first New Year's since turning 21, that's to be expected. Wait, what if they got so drunk they made out! Or went further than that? Uh, excuse me for about, uh, 10 minutes...

5/16/02 (the just out of the theater Attack of the Clones review)
(And other AOTC posts)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's about the best representation of what I'm thinking right now. Look, if you don't want a review filled with hyperbole and major declarations, stop reading now. Also, if you don't like spoilers, stop reading now.
OK, keep in mind I'm very jazzed up right now, and since I can't sleep, here I am.
Now then, thoughts...
It's the best movie I've ever seen. It is. I've NEVER been more blown away by a movie before, and yeah a lot of that had to do with a tremendously fun overall moviegoing experience, including a very lively and rowdy (but not rude) crowd, but I know that what I saw up on screen was EPIC.
The final third of the movie was EVERYTHING I hoped it'd be. Just as TPM's lightsaber duels made the ones in the original trilogy look like slo-mo, the land battles at the end of AOTC make those in TPM look like crap. It wasn't just the sheer volume of things on the screen. There's one utterly brilliant shot of Yoda up in his ship, and we see out of the ship as it turns. The laser blasts keep shooting the right way, convincing us what we're seeing is real. Little details like that are all over the movie. The design is incredible.
Now, how can I not talk about the Yoda-Dooku fight. OMG!! I don't care WHAT occurs in Episode 3. This will forever be the most awesome fight scene in SW history. After Dooku seemingly defeated Obi-Wan and Anakin, the shot cuts to an empty corridor....and then Yoda's shadow appeared. The eruption of applause in the crowd was unbelievable. Seeing all of Dooku's attempts to kill him fail, and then him be all "let's settle this with a lightsaber." I was giddy. I was smiling and clapping and couldn't stop doing either. I AM glad Dooku lives though for Episode 3.
Also, HOW ABOUT MY MAN SAM JACKSON!!!!! He rocked in this whole movie!! His fight with Jango Fett was awesome!!! And how cool that Lucas, Mr. Family PG Audience, has Jango dispatched with a brutal decapitation at the hands of Sam.
I loved all the little moments and scenes here. I loved C-3PO having his head grafted onto a battle droid, and his body merged with a battle droids head, and his comments on it. I loved R2's helpfulness. I loved the shot of young Boba Fett picking up his slain father's helmet. In one shot, the whole perception of Boba Fett changes. I loved those Geonosian creatures.
Look, I loved EVERYTHING. There are minor things that I didn't, but I'm not talking about those now.
Natalie is NOT one of those things. She was great in this. She was rather wooden in TPM (rightly so, as I've said previously), but that's corrected here. I loved her sly putdowns of Anakin. I loved how she took charge. I loved all her outfits. I know I missed a lot of the movie because I was just staring at her. I loved her little pre-arena speech. I even liked her chemistry with Anakin. It wasn't your usual boy-girl romance. It has built-in factors that IMO make it far more meaningful.
I even thought that Hayden was very good. He had a few bad scenes and line readings, but overall he was MUCH better than expected. His master-apprentice relationship with Ewan was authentic.
Ewan OWNED this movie. He nailed everything. I loved all his cracks to Anakin. I loved his one scene with a de-masked Jango.
The romance worked for me. Yeah there were some corny lines, and the first kiss seemed to come way too early, but love is corny and sappy. I'm usually willing to go with a movie on something like this, but I guess either you do or you don't. I did.
This movie just kicked ass in every way possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You kinda nailed exactly why the AOTC romance DOES work. Anakin's been pretty damn sheltered and whatnot for the last 10 years. Now, he's a Jedi, but he's also a guy who's never romanced a girl before. He's probably rarely been around girls. He's gonna say weird stuff. He's gonna make grand declarations of love. If I may steal part of AICN Moriarty's review, it makes sense that Padme would fall for him. She's there with him through the worst moment of his life (his mom's death). Tragedy like that brings people together. Padme's already attracted to him, but now there's a real emotional connection there.
And Hayden really impressed me in that scene where he talks about killing the Tusken Raiders. In not just that scene, but many others, he really gets across the darkside of Anakin, even if it's just in tiny gestures or words. But he's also convincing as a hero. I bet he's gonna be remarkably good in Episode 3.
I saw the movie a 2nd time today, and I'm seeing it again tomorrow (days off work RULE!). It's still hard to get everything absorbed yet. I did notice a cameo by Ahmed Best aka the actor who plays Jar Jar Binks. He's in the bar where Zam Wessell hides. If you know what he looks like he's easy to spot.
One scene I don't like (and there sure ain't many) is the scene in the diner with Dexter Jettster (the guy with 4 arms). As far as fat CGI creatures go, I liked TPM's Boss Nass much better. That whole scene just feels weird as hell. But that's the only scene in the movie that REALLY bugged me.
Grades: Well A+ for all of the SW films. They're all among my 20 or so fave films ever. I will say that the greatness of AOTC hurts just one of them in my eyes and that's TPM. I love TPM, but compared to AOTC it looks like a test reel. Ewan and Natalie are both quite a bit better in AOTC (I'm lovin Ewan in it). The fx are sharper. The great big land battle between the droids and clone troopers destroys gungans vs droids. TPM's climactic lightsaber duel even gets trumped by the absolutely kick ass Yoda-Dooku rumble. And while I actually liked Jar Jar, he does work better in small AOTC doses. That said, I don't really think Lucas diminished Jar Jar's role due to how much he was hated. If he were to have a bigger AOTC role, where would it've been? He wouldn't have gone with Anakin and Padme, nor with Obi-Wan. And he wouldn't be hangin out with Yoda either. But his role is very good here IMO.
I also dug the appearance by Watto. Watto rules. He's just enjoyably slimy. The Death Star hologram was kick ass. But if it took them 20 years to build the first one, how did they build the 2nd Death Star so fast? Or were they building them at the same time?
A couple of the fx shots here were poor (Anakin riding that thing in the field, then he and Padme riding that other thing in the arena). But the thing is a technical masterpiece. If the visual fx Oscar does not go to this movie it's an absolute joke. As for the troopers all being CGI, it didn't bother me. They looked real. I thought I'd have problems with the CGI Yoda, but then he wound up being the star of the whole movie.
And you don't need to wait a month. Go. There'll be seats. I go to the theater about 10 minutes before the movie today and got in fine. Or wait, maybe you shouldn't see it with a big crowd. With the way Nat looks in this movie you're liable to combust right there.

Hooray for everyone who dug AOTC! For those who wound up disappointed, it's your right to feel that way but I can't fathom how you came to such a conclusion.
This movie is just classic Star Wars. Others listed a whole bunch of those cool little moments throughout the film. They were tremendous little additions that added to the film, and didn't distract. They weren't gratuitous. The handful of in-jokes weren't excessive either. They were just funny. The big things were roaring successes too. It delivered on the action, the adventure, and yes the romance too. Han and Leia's romance was not better. So they had more verbal sparring. Big deal. Padme-Anakin is POWERFUL stuff. Their wedding has to be the least happy wedding ending in film history. You just know it's going to go to shit. Even the two of them don't look all that happy. It's like they know themselves that this'll never work out. It's a VERY sad ending and when you combine it with the shot of all those clone troopers, it send the movie out on a real feeling of dread. I loved that. I loved when Yoda gives that little speech to Obi-Wan at the end. "The shroud of the darkside has fallen. Begun the clone war has." HE knows things are gonna get worse and may not get better. How ironic that the secret wedding of Padme and Anakin leads to what turns out to be the only hope for good in the galaxy.

I'd have loved to see some of those scenes stay in the movie. As it is the film moves along at a terrific pace. There are no dead spots like there are in the other SW movies, at least no extended dead spots. There WAS more to the post-Tusken slaughter scene, where Anakin shows some real guilt and remorse for the killings. That's kind of a tough spot though. You keep that in, you help the romance out, but hurt his slide to the darkside.
I didn't cry during the love pledge scene, but it did get to me. That was a great tragic love scene. And as for them getting together, it could be looked at as fate. Certainly the Star Wars films deal with fate and destiny a lot. With themes like that you have to believe in it or it just won't work for you I guess. It's Anakin and Padme's destiny to be together.
"I'm sure we all agree the love story was fucking awful"-tool
No, we don't. Learn to read.

People need to stop comparing AOTC to the original trilogy. They are really a whole different ballgame than the earlier films. The prequels as a whole are downers. They are sad. In these 3 films, the bad guys win, and the good guys either suffer, die or turn evil. If people require joy and fun from their SW movies, then they can skip the prequels altogether. Now, I think AOTC is a great great GREAT film. For me, it only stumbles slightly when it actually does go for some more comedic moments (i.e. the diner scene). To its credit, it doesn't strain for comedy though, and it never takes over either. Not even C-3PO's shtick diminishes that Geonosis arena battle.
Yes it takes itself seriously. Well, AOTC is a serious story. The next film is gonna be even MORE serious. Get used to it. The fun is gone for the most part, and if it weren't it'd make no sense for the story taking place. In every film it's a virtual given that good triumphs over evil. But Lucas is giving us a whole trilogy about evil achieving victory. In time I believe that even the prequel naysayers will see that, even with one film to go, the prequels are the richer films for story and character.

--Leia vs Padme
I'll take Padme. I like Nat's portrayal more than Fisher's. Character wise they're pretty close.
--Ewan's Kenobi vs Alec's Kenobi
Alec was great. No question. Ewan is too though in AOTC. Call it a draw.
--Boba Fett vs Jango
Boba Fett just stood around. Han was handed to him, then he got killed by a blind Han. Jango went right after Obi-Wan and basically whooped him. He was taken down by badass Mace Windu.
--Chewy vs Jar Jar
What dd Chewy do that was so great? OK, he beat some people up and fixed the Falcon a couple times. Comic relief or not, Jar Jar at least had a bit of a character arc.
