Returning to the Movies

After 158 days away I finally went to a movie again. AMC did a 15 cent tickets promotion for re-opening day and I went to see The Empire Strikes Back.

Fingers crossed this all works out, and I think it should based on what I saw.

Limited seating, masks required, a more spaced out lobby. But really, aside from wearing a mask this wasn't a whole lot different than going to a middle of the afternoon matinee during the week.

The strangest thing for me, oddly, was watching a whole movie completely uninterrupted. At home, no matter what I am using to watch a movie, almost every single one gets paused at least once.

It felt weird seeing trailers again (including that sweet Black Widow one that dropped right before the world ended). Not that trailers haven't been released these last months, but with everything so up in the air it felt strange to see firm dates applied to things.

I got legit emotional heading back. Yeah we have had sports taken away for much of this period too, but there are always offseasons. I'm used to sports going away for a while. There is no movie offseason, so the absence of them really hurt. Yes, ironically I probably watched.more "new to me" movies in the last 5.months than any 5 month period in my life, but there is no substitute for the theater experience. Hell, I even watched Empire just a couple months ago for its 40th, but got way more engrossed in it today.

Cool seeing that particular movie on the big screen again btw. The only other time I saw this in theaters was WAY back during my senior year of high school when the special editions came out. And this wasn't the SE, it was the one updated with prequels Palpatine and Boba Fett's clone voice.

I've already peeked ahead at the next couple weeks worth of showtimes. There are a few new releases (could New Mutants actually make it?), mixed with some classics, and I imagine that's how it will be until the studios get back to any kind of regular release schedule. It might not get truly back to any normal until all the big cities can open again.
